IThemba LABS

IThemba LABS Administered by the National Research Foundation. iThemba LABS brings together scientists working in the physical, medical and biological sciences.
(1)

The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a multi-disciplinary research facility that is based on the development, operation and use of particle accelerators & related research equipment. The facilities provide opportunities for modern research, advanced education, the treatment of cancers and the production of unique radioisotopes. Our company's primary focus is on providing scientifically and medically useful radiation through the acceleration of charged particles using the Separated Sector Cyclotron, the Van der Graaff Accelerator and other appropriate technologies. iThemba LABS aims to be the primary centre of expertise in radiation medicine and nuclear science and technologies to advance the knowledge and health of the people of Africa.

Our understanding of the natural world relies on our ability to model phenomena. The reliability of the models, in turn, depends on the availability of experimental data that can be used to test the descriptive and predictive capabilities of the model. Dr Peter von Neuman-Cosel from the Technishe Universitat Darmstadt shared recent developments related to Gamma Strength Functions and the Brink-Axel hypothesis. The experimental data come from the study of photo absorption in proton inelastic scaterring studies with a magnetic spectrometer at forward angles. Did YOU know that NRF-iThemba LABS is home to a magnetic spectrometer? The other similar system in the world is hosted by the Research Center for Nucler Physics in Osaka, Japan.

Mr Sethosa Metuel Dipuo, an MSc-student registered at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, is conducting research on magnetic targeted drug delivery that uses bio-compatible magnetic nanoparticles that are medication loaded. He is currently making use of the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at NRF-iThemba LABS to study the magnetic properties of his nanoparticle. His research is supervised by Dr Lebogang Kotsedi at NRF-iThemba LABS and Dr Amos Nhlapo at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. This is an example of how a national research infrastructure platform is used to advance knowledge through strategic and intentional partnerships.@
