The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a multi-disciplinary research facility that is based on the development, operation and use of particle accelerators & related research equipment. The facilities provide opportunities for modern research, advanced education, the treatment of cancers and the production of unique radioisotopes. Our company's primary focus is on providing scientifically and medically useful radiation through the acceleration of charged particles using the Separated Sector Cyclotron, the Van der Graaff Accelerator and other appropriate technologies. iThemba LABS aims to be the primary centre of expertise in radiation medicine and nuclear science and technologies to advance the knowledge and health of the people of Africa.

Did you know that that there are NINETEEN different elements that are essential to human life: from the iron in your blood to the calcium in your bones? But how were these elements formed?
Join us for a public lecture as Dr Christian Iliadis, distinguished professor at the University of North Carolina, unpacks element synthesis through a journey from stars to atomic nuclei, from fusion to neutrinos, and the weird world of quantum mechanics on Tuesday, 25 November, at 18h00.

NRF-iThemba LABS had the pleasure of hosting 120 learners from Malibu High School on Friday, 31 October.
The learners had the opportunity to listen to a number of presentations that introduced the facility and its research activities covering materials research, isotope production, and how science is used to "fight cancer." In addition, the learners had in-depth conversations with some of the technical personnel as they shared information on vacuum systems, software engineering, mechanical design, and fabrication.
What an amazing learning opportunity for both the learners and our staff. NRF-iThemba LABS is committed to advance knowledge, to inspire a nation, and to transform lives through expertise, research, and training in accelerator-based science and technology.

A special word of thanks goes to Mr Jamiel Landers from the MEED for facilitating the visit.

TileCal Week 2025 kicked off in Cape Town South Africa today.
The ATLAS Tile Calorimeter community gathers at iThemba LABS in South Africa from September 29 to October 3, 2025, for the third TileCal Week of the year, and the fourth one held outside CERN, following the meetings in Rio de Janeiro in 2008, Tbilisi in 2018 and Pisa in 2023.

TileCal Week is hosted by iThemba LABS, with support from the local organizing team and the broader South African high-energy physics community.
