Aurora Brown, Registered Counsellor

Aurora Brown, Registered Counsellor Q***r-friendly, intersectional, wheelchair-using Registered Counsellor, podcaster, and human rights activist. HPCSA reg.: PRC 0042951

I am a transgender woman and wheelchair-using amputee passionate about helping others overcome the obstacles to living their best lives. As a Registered Counsellor, I approach counselling through a decolonial, intersectional lens. My professional skills and training integrate the evidence-based principles of positive neuroplasticity, relational pattern analysis, schema theory, gender-affirming healthcare, polyvagal theory, play interventions, and dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT).

* Counselling
I provide inclusive, person-centred counselling and mental health coaching for individual adults and adolescents. Counselling is also available for couples or pairs, groups, and family systems.

* Psychometrics
I offer gentle, accredited school-readiness assessments for Grade R learners, as well as subject choice guidance for Grade 9 learners and comprehensive career assessments for adults and Grade 11-12 learners.

* Psychoeducation
My psychoeducational workshops cover topics including gender diversity and sexual health, maternal mental health and reproduction, disability, identity development, emotional regulation, and stress or burnout. Disclaimer:

In this episode of Intersectional Psychology, I sit down with Nicole Engelbrecht (.one), award-winning host of True Crime South Africa (), to talk about what it means to tell stories of violence with empathy, not exploitation.

We unpack:
🧠 The ethics of true crime storytelling

πŸ’› Talking about su***de doesn’t make it more likely β€” silence does. Checking in with someone can be a lifeline.

But Registered Counsellor explains that how we talk also matters. Avoid sharing details of su***de methods or locations β€” compassion means choosing words that heal, not harm.

Transcript:
"If you believe someone is struggling, it is good to check in with them. Research shows that talking about su***de does not increase the risk of someone attempting su***de. It can be such a relief to acknowledge the heavy burden that they are carrying.

However, please avoid sharing the details of someone's su***de method and location. Research shows that public communication that includes descriptions of su***de method or location has been associated with increased rates of su***de behavior and imitation of that su***de method or location. Language matters. It shapes how we think and feel and how much compassion we can extend."

🌈 Gender-affirming care is about so much more than hormones or surgery.

In this clip, Dr Anastacia Tomson ( / ) reminds us that real affirmation also means creating safe, welcoming environments: from bathrooms and restrooms, to clinic spaces where everyone feels seen.

It’s not about adding a β€œtrans room.” 🚫 It’s about dismantling the barriers that stop people from being affirmed in the first place.

πŸŽ™οΈ Full episode: Intersectional Psychology S03E01 β€” The Truth About Gender-Affirming Health Care

Transcript:
"I'm not going to say healthcare, but I'm going to say care for trans and gender-diverse people to this narrow focus of hormones and surgery, like that really isn't enough, you know. We should welcome at the clinic, we should welcome people to use the bathroom or the restroom with which they identify, but we should also provide a neutral space for people who aren't comfortable in either of those spaces.

You know, and it doesn't mean now you have the men's room, the women's room and the trans' room that all of the trans' must go to, you know, it's not like that. But it's really about just figuring out what are the things that are acting actively to dismantle affirmation? And how do we deal with that?"
