When Jane moved to Oasis Life Burgundy Estate, her children were relieved. “They were really happy I chose to live here,” she says. “It’s given us all peace of mind.”

Her grandchildren are regulars too. “They love spending nights and weekends with me — walking around the estate, swimming in the indoor heated aerobics pool, and having milkshakes at the restaurant in the Clubhouse. They feel like I live in a resort!”

It’s a way of life built around connection, independence and everyday joy — where family feels welcome and community grows naturally over time.

Jane’s story features in The Glow Issue of Oasis Life Ripple magazine, alongside reflections on confidence, ageing positively and building a life that still feels full.

Race-walking has its quirks and Piet enjoys every one of them!

“You get funny comments,” he laughs. “Someone warned me about a speed trap downhill. Another asked if my disc brakes were working.” But it’s the camaraderie that stays with him the most. “Same faces, same time. You wave, you chat. You encourage each other. That’s the nice part.”

At Oasis Life Clara Anna Fontein, Piet has found both freedom and structure. “You can’t ask for a better place to train,” he says. “The open spaces, the safety, the hills. You mix with people of all ages. There’s life here.”

At 75, Piet still trains five days a week, clocking thousands of kilometres on the estate’s walkways. “You determine your own pace here,” he says.

🍂 Let's talk about the recipes that stand the test of time!

As part of our upcoming Ripple Autumn issue, we’re looking to feature a small edit of beloved recipes that have been passed down through families — dishes that still find their way to the table today and continue to inspire the next generation.

These are the recipes with a story. The ones you grew up with. The ones that say "This is home."

Downsizing. Resizing. Rightsizing. The goal is the same: a life with less maintenance and more meaning. When your home becomes a burden instead of a sanctuary, rightsizing your lifestyle is a game changer.

Resize your life rather than downsize...

Deciding to downsize often feels like you are giving up life as you know it, but this year it’s time to rethink the move and consider it as more of a resize. Here's why - https://tinyurl.com/y7bx8y3x

🧬 Your genes aren’t necessarily your destiny.
New research shows daily lifestyle habits account for ~17% of mortality risk, compared to less than 2% from genetics alone.

What you eat, how you sleep, how you move and manage stress can still make a meaningful difference — at any age.

Marion is anything but retired! “I’ve lived too full a life to sit still,” she says. These days, her mornings often include meeting friends for a Bootleggers coffee at the Clubhouse at Oasis Life Constantia.

“We’re not old enough to have our main meal at lunchtime and go to bed at seven o’clock! I still like to have a drink at the pub and an evening out.”

For Marion, that freedom matters. “It’s not like anywhere else,” she says. “They’re creating something new here. Every detail has been thought through — what’s right for the area, the people, the lifestyle. You can see the care in the details.”

And that, she believes, is the point. “They’ve built something that actually understands today’s retirees — people who still have a lot of living left to do.”

“Glow comes from confidence, not a number.”
— Jane, resident at Oasis Life Burgundy Estate, Cape Town

“Glow starts from the inside — confidence, kindness, and doing something that makes you feel like you,” Jane says. For her, it’s about “showing up as yourself.”

And then there’s laughter. “Laughter is everything,” she adds. “It keeps the wrinkles in the right places!” In Jane’s world, “a laugh and a glass of wine with friends works better than any serum.”

Her perspective sits firmly within a broader age-positivity movement championed by voices like Ken Dychtwald and Dion Chang — a reframing of ageing as growth rather than decline. “You can’t control age,” Jane says, “but you can control how you approach it.”

As the cover star of The Glow Issue of Oasis Life Ripple magazine, Jane embodies this cultural shift around reimagining ageing — living with confidence, warmth, and clarity about what truly matters.

In 1975, Piet Pretorius raced The Big Walk in Cape Town.
In 2026, he’s still moving forward — now as a 75-year-old national record-holding race walker and resident at Oasis Life Clara Anna Fontein.

Piet’s story isn’t about extremes. It’s about discipline, environment, and setting goals that evolve with you. “You can retire without retreating,” he says. “You determine your own pace.”

As the year begins, The Glow Issue of Oasis Life Ripple explores how confidence, routine and community help shape longevity.
“My view is simple,” Piet adds. “Start slow. But start.”

01/01/2026

There’s something special about starting the year surrounded by neighbours who’ve become friends!

Jeanette from 9th Avenue, along with her group of friends affectionately known as The Wild Olives, hosted a New Year’s Eve street braai and welcomed fellow residents to join in the fun.

These are just some of the ways our community shows up at Oasis Life Burgundy Estate: good food, shared laughter and an easy sense of belonging.

Thanks to Jeanette Auret for the great content! Wishing everyone a fabulous first day of 2026!

A new age of retirement

“Rabie has been the leading property developer in the Western Cape for 40 years. During this time we’ve designed, developed and delivered tens of thousands of homes, and millions of square metres of commercial and retail space. But our focus has never just been bricks and mortar.

“Increasingly we’ve devoted ourselves to developing large-scale estates and well integrated, mixed-use developments designed to enhance the quality of life of the people who live, work and play there. In short, we have concentrated on creating spaces people enjoy.

“Now we are extending that throught process into the retirement space. So we put in all the features we’d really love in a retirement village, all the old-fashioned personal service and all the new technology that makes it so easy to connect with our families wherever they may be. And we added everything we’ve learned from our sell-out success of the Oasis Luxury Retirement Resort in Century City.

“Then we looked long and hard at a financial model that would make this level of comfort, security and fun affordable for ordinary South Africans in the uncertain times we are retiring into. After working and reworking our plans, we believe we’ve come up with an excellent solution. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Oasis Life: retirement living we think you’ll love.”
