Palliative care is still widely misunderstood as something offered only at the end of life. In reality, it is an interdisciplinary, whole-person approach that begins at diagnosis and continues alongside active treatment.
Unlike multidisciplinary teams that work in parallel, interdisciplinary teams integrate their skills, share decisions, and build a single care plan that supports every aspect of a patient’s wellbeing.
Pain specialists, nurses, social workers, counsellors, and spiritual care providers work together to ease symptoms, strengthen resilience, and support families through the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual impact of cancer.
Across South Africa, hospices and palliative centres walk alongside thousands of patients and tens of thousands of family members each year, proving that palliative care is not only about dignity at the end of life, but about quality of life at every stage of illness.
As World Cancer Day reminds us, cancer care must be people-centred. Palliative professionals are the quiet specialists, ensuring that no one faces the journey unsupported.

Every cancer journey is personal, and people-centred care can save lives, restore dignity, and give hope.

Now in its second year, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC),’s global United by Unique campaign highlights the importance of seeing the person behind the diagnosis and responding to their individual needs, circumstances and lived experiences.

Ask yourself: What can I do? Share your cancer story — as a survivor, caregiver, loved one, or healthcare worker — through writing, artwork, or video or join the Upside Down Challenge.

You can also get involved by accessing free CANSA cancer screenings in selected areas, or joining events running until the end of March 2026, including Walks, Relay For Life, and support group meetings.

In the wound care world we don't often see happiness and joyfullnes. Wound care as many medical services, are grudge purchases. This pt of mine is probably the highlight of my week. Always smiling and always cheerful, even when she has a huge wound. Nothing brings her down. With concent of the daughter of one of my patients who gave me this video, you don't have to be old and not enjoy life. Live your best life every day. You be the smile in someone else's day😉

When Lisette was born with a cleft condition, the doctors told her mother, Jenny, about the possibility of surgery. However, it didn't seem like a realistic solution until Jenny heard about an Operation Smile surgical program. After a health evaluation, Lisette was scheduled for surgery and although Jenny was anxious, she remained positive that the surgery would be successful. Jenny was overcome with emotion when she saw Lisette for the first time post-surgery and was amazed at the difference after the short time in the operating room. Today, Lisette is an active child living a happy childhood. She loves to play with her friends and with her dolls.
