Parenting is difficult. And one of the most important parts of parenting is disciplining our children with love. Here are a quick guide that might help to shed a bit of light on the topic.

Children are looking for boundaries and therefore are constantly testing them. This leads to lots of frustration, friction and increased stress levels in an already stressful home environment. Parents tend to give in, keeping some peace rather than creating boundaries, which is a short term solution...

Winter is almost here and the Flu Season has started!!!

There is a big difference between flu and a cold. Whereas a cold can be caused by numerous viruses like boca virus, Rhinovirus,Enterovirus etc.Flu is caused by the influenza and parainfluenza viruses.
Having a cold generally includes a runny nose, a cough, slight fever, maybe a headache and generally an icky feeling.
On the contrary does flu seldom include a runny nose, but a high fever and chills, sore achy body, headache, maybe a dry cough and sometimes pneumonia. It is a very serious disease and people can still die from it. That is the reason that the flu vaccine is recommended to everybody during the flu season.
Getting the vaccine can lead to mild low grade symptoms like mild fever, achy sore body etc. but will prevent influenza. It will not however prevent a cold.

Stay healthy this winter,Get your flu vaccination from you local pharmacy.

Deworming

As a rule, all children should be dewormed twice a year from the age of 18mnths. Intestinal worms are exceptionally common in South Africa and as children love to play and pat animals(strays included) or love playing in the sandpit at school, they are at high risk of being infected with intestinal worms.Worms do not cause a lot of problems unless there is an overwhelming infestation in which case it can cause bowel obstruction, a chronic cough,an itchy bum or failure to pick up weight. The most feared complications is neurocysticercosis where a worm egg forms in the brain of a child. This leads to convulsions and other complications. This most commonly comes from eating under-cooked pork, but is a very rare complication.
Worm syrups are readily available from your nearest pharmacy, or you are welcome to email me to request a script.

Interesting trivia: Ringworm is not a worm, but a fungal infection of the skin
