I thought I might share some thoughts on cramping. I’ve been having a lot of questions about cramping.
What happens?
An involuntary, strong contraction that results in a cramp. It is usually a localized muscle cramp that happens spasmodically and with no warning. Cramping causes acute pain, stiffness, and visible “knots” or “spasms.” Pain can be for a short while or can sometimes last for days. Muscles affected- hamstrings, quadriceps, and most commonly, the gastrocnemius (calf) muscle.
2 main causes:
- Altered Neuromuscular Control (most evidence-supported theory)
Muscle overload and, or muscle fatigue can cause an imbalance in the impulses going to the muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs.
This imbalance usually happens in an already-shortened position.
- Dehydration or electrolyte imbalance caused by excessive sweating/ heat exhaustion
Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphate, Bicarbonate) are essential for conducting neural impulses, helping muscles contract, regulating your body’s pH levels, and staying hydrated.
Magnesium deficiency (more of a MYTH, not widely supported by evidence, but Magnesium forms part of the essential electrolytes)
Magnesium plays a key role in the functioning of muscles and nerves. It is essential for maintaining an electoral balance, bone health, and a healthy metabolism.
Treatment is dependent on the cause.
- Neural gliders can be a helpful tool, (in combination with other treatment modalities) to improve neural dynamics.
