Myth vs Fact 🦴💙

Myth:
"Once you have a hip replacement, you can't be active or play sports ever again." ❌

Fact ✅ :
The main goal of a hip replacement is to restore function and allow you to live an active, pain-free life

While high-impact activities like running or basketball are usually discouraged, low-impact sports are highly recommended. Many patients return to activities they love, including swimming, golf, cycling, doubles tennis, and hiking!

💙 Hip replacement is about getting back to life with confidence and mobility.

🦴 Bones Are Living Tissue, Not Just a Framework

Your bones are constantly changing and renewing themselves. Every day, old bone is broken down and replaced with new bone in a natural process called bone remodelling. This cycle helps bones stay strong and adapt to the demands placed on them.

Movement plays a vital role in this process. Weight-bearing activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and gentle resistance exercises signal your body to build and maintain bone strength. Without regular movement, bones can gradually lose density, becoming weaker over time.

💙 Keeping active, supporting your body with proper nutrition, and addressing joint pain early can all help protect your bone health and maintain long-term mobility.

FAQ with Dr Roy: What Causes Weak Knees? 🦵

Weak knees are usually caused by a combination of factors. The most common is muscle weakness around the knee, especially the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes, which provide support and stability.

Other causes can include:
✅ Long periods of inactivity
✅ Previous injuries (like ligament or meniscus damage)
✅ Wear and tear or arthritis
✅ Poor alignment or overuse

If your knees feel weak or unstable and it’s affecting your daily life, it’s important to get assessed so the underlying cause can be treated properly.

💙 Strengthening exercises, physiotherapy, and proper guidance can make a big difference in regaining knee strength and confidence!

Emotional Journey of Recovery After Knee Surgery💙

Recovering from knee surgery isn’t just physical, it’s an emotional journey too. Patients often experience frustration, anxiety, or impatience as they work through pain, limited mobility, and the slow pace of recovery.

Coping strategies can make a big difference:
✨ Lean on your support network - family, friends
✨ Set small, achievable goals each day
✨ Celebrate progress, no matter how minor
✨ Stay consistent with physiotherapy

Remember, recovery is a step-by-step process, and taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical rehabilitation. 💙

💪 Meet Your Hip Flexors: The Re**us Femoris 🦵

The re**us femoris is the largest muscle in the front of your thigh. It’s part of your hip flexors, helping you lift your leg, bend your hip, and power movements like walking, running, and climbing stairs.

Keeping this muscle strong and flexible is key for knee and hip stability, preventing pain, and improving overall mobility.

Simple exercises like leg lifts or stretches can make a big difference!

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day 🦴💙

Today we raise awareness for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) - a chronic autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the joints, often affecting the knees and hips.

Early diagnosis and proper management are key to reducing pain, protecting your joints, and maintaining mobility.

If you experience persistent joint pain, stiffness, or swelling, it’s important to seek medical advice early.

Treatments, physiotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments can make a big difference in improving quality of life.

Myth: Hip movement is just about muscles and bones.

✅ Fact:
Nerves and arteries play a crucial role in hip function!

Nerves like the femoral, sciatic, and obturator nerves carry signals from your brain to your muscles to help you move and bring back sensory signals like touch, pain, and temperature.

Arteries, including the femoral artery, supply blood to your lower limbs, keeping your muscles and tissues healthy.

Healthy hips rely on more than just bones - nerves and blood supply are key to smooth, pain-free movement!

FAQ: Can Weak Knees Be Strengthened? 🦵

Yes!
You don’t need to spend hours at the gym. Consistent, gentle exercises are enough to keep your knees strong and stable.

Focusing on the muscles around your knees, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves - helps support the joint, improve stability, and protect your knees from pain or injury. 💪

Even small, regular steps make a big difference over time!

💬 What to Expect During Your Hip Replacement 🦵

Most patients stay in hospital for just 1-2 nights!

After surgery, physiotherapy begins as soon as possible, starting with gentle exercises in bed and progressing to walking with a frame.

By the time of discharge, usually day 1 or 2 post-op, most patients are mobilising comfortably and ready to continue their recovery at home.

💙 Following your physiotherapy plan helps you regain mobility faster and enjoy a smooth recovery!
