Exited the rollercoaster that was 2020 as a covid dietitian... and entering 2021... as a covid dietitian.

A reminder to please continue to wear your masks, sanitize regularly & keep your 1.5m distance. Distancing does not have to mean lack of social interaction, only lack of physical interaction. Be responsible & help make 2021 better for all. Help us in healthcare as we have been helping you. We're exhausted & tired of covid too.

Vitamin B (or B complex) is made up of a group of water-soluble vitamins which include

🔸️B1 (thiamine)
🔸️B2 (riboflavin)
🔸️B5 (pantothenic acid)
🔸️B6 (pyridoxine)
🔸️B12 (cobalamin)

Biotin & folic acid also form part of the B vitamin group.

These vitamins are generally found within the same food groups/items & are not found isolated from each other.

Since they have similar functions they require each other to be used optimally by the body, although they may also work alone.

They are not stored very well by the body.

Deficiencies can occure very easily especially with certain weight loss diets, fasting, diets high in processed foods, sugar & alcohol.

Deficiencies can also occur in times of stress as well.

Each element or singular B Vitamin performs its own function in the body but when combined with each other, will provide essential maintenance to the body to keep it healthy.

Vitamin A, also called retinol or beta-carotene (provitamin A), is a fat-soluble vitamin.

🔅Retinol is mostly derived from animal sources & is one of the most well absorbed & efficiently used forms of vitamin A.

🔅Provitamin A is mainly derived from certain fruits & veg which get converted to retinol by the body.

🔅Vitamin A is largely stored in the liver & plays an important role in eyesight & visual function.

🔅It helps protect cell membranes & tissue linings against free radicals by acting as an antioxidant.

🔅It also plays an important role in immunity & strengthening resistance.

🔅The daily recommended intake is 2997 IU.
Get too much & you'll notice:
🔸️dry eyes
🔸️scaling/peeling skin
🔸️hair loss
🔸️brittle nails
🔸️dizziness, headaches, fatigue
🔸️nausea
Get too little & you'll notice:
🔸️visual impairment
🔸️night blindness
🔸️flaky scalp
