Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (SHAWCO) 💙 is a UCT student-run NPO empowering communities, inspiring students & driving change through health, education & social impact across Cape Town! 🌍
🌱 Building a brighter country - together. SHAWCO Health co-ordinates eight student-run clinics each week in over 12 developing communities: six clinics which operate at night from Monday to Wednesday in various Cape Town communities. Each clinic has a qualified doctor to supervise the volunteer students, and a registered dispensing nurse who oversees the clinic pharmacy. All services and treatment is offered free of charge to patients. SHAWCO Health is one of the 3 major sectors of SHAWCO (Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation), which is a dynamic, innovative and passionate student-run organisation based at the University of Cape Town.

“You asked me what family is…”

Last Saturday, we saw it come alive in Houtbay. In many communities across South Africa, accessing healthcare isn’t just about treatment - it’s about overcoming barriers. Long distances, overcrowded clinics, and limited resources often mean that care is delayed or missed entirely. But when we come together, we can change that.

At Hangberg Sentinel Primary School, we collaborated with to host our annual Family Day Clinic, and this year’s impact was profound.

📍 424 patients registered
👩‍⚕️ 14 doctors & medical students saw 250+ patients
🦷 treated 180 patients
🎀 screened 168 women with 9 referred for further care
💊 A fully stocked pharmacy served the community
👥 24 community health workers from /HIVCare and received in-service training while supporting screenings

In case you missed it, last Saturday our Health and Rehabilitation SHAWCO-ites collaborated with Sisanda FunDaytion to help children in Tambo Village!

From face painting and balloons, to hockey and healthcare - an abundance of amazing memories were made!

So many children's lives were impacted and we'd love to extend a huge thank you to The Crazy Store Book Dash Tiger Brands and Jungle South Africa for helping us do that! 🎈📚

From joining the Joe Slovo community clinic and bringing care directly to the people ➡️ to empowering over 70 womxn at ’s vibrant Womxn’s Health Campaign in Langa — this month was packed with purpose.

Shoutout to our Health Promotion team for lighting up the room with crucial conversations on GBV, cancer, burns, and reproductive health 🔥💜

Hypertension — or high blood pressure — affects millions of South Africans, often without any warning signs. Left untreated, it can lead to serious complications like heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.
