Did you know that there are different kinds of hearing tests?
Hearing Screening
A hearing screening is a brief presentation of tones across the human sound spectrum, set at a level that a person with normal hearing should detect. It serves to identify whether a person MAY have a hearing loss or not.
Basic Hearing Test:
This test includes a presentation of tones at lowering volume at many pitches, but seeks the minimum level you can hear, which yields a graph of your personal hearing minimum sensitivity levels, shown as a graph called an audiogram.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation
This test goes further than the audiogram, to evaluate which part of the peripheral (ear's) auditory system may be the cause of your hearing loss, but also to evaluate your ability to hear speech clearly, in quiet and in noise. A comprehensive exam also ensures that anything that can be treated by a medical doctor, is identified, so that you can regain any amount of natural hearing possible, prior to consideration of a hearing aid.
Specialized Auditory Exams:
Special examinations are conducted if your complaint and diagnostic evaluation of the ear, indicates that more information is needed to explain your problem. These usually use equipment to investigate the way your system is processing sound, or to identify whether a part of the auditory system (all the way to the cortex in the brain!) is contributing to a more complex challenge than some ear-based hearing losses do. Specialized tests can help you to achieve better therapeutic outcomes because your professional understands the mechanism of your problem, more extensively. Examples are: the measurement of the pressure tube in the middle ear; measurement of the health of your cochlea hair cells; measuring the firing of your auditory nerve; and following the brain response from your ear to the primary auditory cortex; or even assessing the processing of sounds of speech by the brain!
