So it has taken me ages to get around to adding a post. My apologies to those who came and found nothing new on the page.
Our statement a few weeks ago in the church bulletin pointed towards the fact that diseases of lifestyle: specifically hypertension and diabetes, account for greater morbidity and mortality than illnesses like HIV. To some, this is a surprise because of the increasing awareness in our country, and around the world, of HIV and its extensive effects.
The truth is, not all people are exposed to the HI-virus. Not all people come into contact with TB germs. But we are all faced daily with choices that could lead to hypertension and diabetes.
The question is: why does it matter? Are those illenesses? Are they dangerous? Do they have long term consequences?
The answer is YES to all those questions.
A YES that I wish I could shout from the mountains. Many patients of mine say "no" when asked: "do you have any chronic illnesses?". But then when asked which medications they are on, list 7 to 16 different tablets and injections for "just the high blood and sugar pills".
Those same patients who have "no chronic illnesses" join us in the wards for multiple admissions. Sometimes for treatment of heart attacks. Sometimes treatment of strokes. Often they are admitted for kidney failure for which there is no treatment anyway. Surgical wards see those same "healthy" individuals for treatment of sores that don't heal, and eventually amputate many feet and legs from people who continue to answer "no" to the question "do you have any illnesses or diseases?".
Friends, these two conditions account for and contribute to the vast majority of patients admitted to hospitals in SA and in many places in the world. Their complications are tremendous and sadly many sufferers don't understand even the basics of these illnesses.
If you have been told that you have high blood pressure or diabetes, have family/friends that suffer from these illnesses or simply want to know how you can prevent becoming diabetic or hypertensive, please reply to this post or email Claremont Health Ministries. We will set up a workshop date where details can be discussed and valuable information shared.
Today is the day to make a choice.
Be informed about your health!
May God continue to teach us how to build up the temples we call "our" bodies.
