Is brown sugar better for you than white sugar? Let’s consider some nutritional facts:
White sugar is a refined sugar that is extracted from sugarcane. At the end of the refining process (which strips the sugar of its natural nutrients and minerals), it is a pure white crystal, almost 100% sucrose.
Brown sugar, on the other hand, still contains some of the natural molasses and minerals found in sugarcane, and is approximately 96% sucrose. The presence of molasses in brown sugar provides a very small amount of minerals (iron, calcium, potassium and some magnesium).
The difference in calories and glycemic index is minimal.
In summary: neither brown sugar nor white sugar is inherently better. What is important, is that both types of sugar be consumed in moderation!
