One of the key highlights of the Knysna Extreme Triathlon is the challenging swim leg, which takes place in the estuary's waters. The estuary provides an exciting and demanding challenge, with strong currents and varying water temperatures that test the endurance and skills of the athletes. The swim will start at 05H00 with sunrise at 05H13, creating a visually captivating start to the race.

The total surface area of this estuarine is about 1,827 hectares and is a formed where the Knysna River meets the Indian Ocean. This estuary is renowned for its unique blend of saltwater and freshwater, creating an ecosystem that supports a diverse array of flora and fauna. The estuaryโsโ most celebrated resident is, of course, the Knysna seahorse โ South Africaโs only endemic seahorse species.
