MidAid is moving

Less than a year ago, most of us welcomed the year 2020 with much excitement and anticipation. The new year was meant to usher in a new season of promise and prosperity. Little did we know that life as we knew it would change.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a truly unprecedented situation which has affected us all.

MidAid Medical, like so many other small businesses, fell victim to the brutality of the impact of the pandemic. The uncertainty of the future exposed vulnerabilities and forced me, as business owner, to re-evaluate the sustainability of a small business amidst increased overhead costs and major financial losses suffered as a result of the pandemic.

Many of you have known me since I started out in private GP practice 25 years ago. Way back then, I was a local Centurion girl who returned to serve her community with passion and dedication. Over the past 25 years I have always tried to make a difference in the lives of those I encounter.

Unfortunately, the stresses caused by trying to save a business in these turbulent times become a major hindrance to practicing my passion as healthcare professional.

The future will require navigating through a new "normal". The journey ahead requires partnership and as such the best solution will be to join NHC.

My practice will be relocating to the Centurion NHC Health Care Centre next to Grey Owl Shopping Centre, corner of Brakfontein and Erasmus Road.

I look forward to having access to an established and stable support system, so that I can continue to provide my patients with the personalised and professional healthcare that you have become accustomed to.

I believe that the move will prove to be beneficial to me as your healthcare provider and to you as patient. You will have access to multi-disciplinary services on site (physiotherapy, radiology, pathology, audiology, a pharmacy and specialist services including neurology and dermatology etc).

As of Monday 14 December 2020 my contact details will be:
docstroh@nhcltd.com
012-7626300

Thank you for your support and look forward to servicing you at our new facilities.

Tetanus Vaccination:

Tetanus is a bacteria that survives as spores in the soil. The bacteria can enter the body through a wound. The highest risk of tetanus infection is with dirty wounds (i.e.: from a rusty nail or from a wound contaminated by soil.) If there is co-infection and dead tissue in the wound tetanus can produce toxins. These toxins travel to the spinal cord and cause loss of inhibition of the nerves. This causes uncontrolled muscle spasm (i.e.: lock jaw and spastic paralysis). Once the toxin becomes fixed to nerves it cannot be neutralised with anti-toxin thus immunisation and prevention is very important.

When you sustain an injury resulting in a wound, when do you vaccinate?
If you have had more than 3 lifetime doses of the tetanus vaccine and….
• If the wound is clean, get a booster if you have not had one in the last 10 years.
• If the wound is dirty, get a booster if you have not had one in the last 5 years.
If you have had less than 3 lifetime doses of the tetanus vaccine:
• If the wound is clean, a booster is advised
• If the wound is dirty, you should receive a booster and immunoglobulins (antibodies that will prevent any infection while your own immune system develops antibodies)
In South Africa the routine childhood immunisation schedule includes tetanus vaccinations at:
• 6 weeks
• 10 weeks
• 14 weeks
• 18 months
• 6 years
• 12 years
If you are unsure of when last you were vaccinated - it is always safer to get another vaccination.

Are you up to date with your health screening?

This article explains which investigations are recommended as part of a health screening as well as the recommended age at which to begin screening and the recommended frequency of investigation.
Please note that earlier investigation may be required if you have a significant family history - please talk to your doctor.
For women:
Mammograms are recommended from the age of 40 for early detection of breast cancer. International guidelines are not clear but either annual or two yearly mammograms will be advised. Please discuss this with your doctor.
Pap smears are recommended every 3 years from the age of 21 to detect pre-cancerous changes of the cervix. If there are abnormalities on the Pap smear you will be referred to a gynaecologist for further management.
For men:
South African guidelines recommend that men over the age of 55 should have an annual PSA check to detect early prostate cancer.
For everyone:
A colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years after the age of 50 to screen for colon cancer. (An alternative would be checking the stool for occult blood annually after the age of 50. If there is any blood in the stool, a colonoscopy would be recommended.)
A DEXA scan (commonly referred to as a bone density scan) is recommended for men and women alike after the age of 65 to detect osteoporosis (thin bones). If you are a smoker or have been on chronic steroids, then earlier investigation would be recommended. Please speak to your doctor.
For smokers:
If you have a long standing smoking history and are over the age of 55 then an annual low dose CT scan would be recommended to screen for lung cancer.

Please speak to your doctor if you are not up to date with any of the above screening tests.

Remember, early diagnosis – better prognosis!

Good day everyone,

This post is to introduce myself, Dr Emily Shires, to those that I have not yet met and to give those that I have met a bit more of my background.

I have been working at MidAid Medical with Dr Liesl Stroh and the rest of the lovely MidAid team since mid-February 2019. It really has been such a joy to work with such compassionate colleagues and I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few months here.

I am originally from Johannesburg and schooled at Redhill School. I then completed my tertiary MBChB studies at the University of Cape Town. I moved back up to Gauteng for my internship at Kalafong Hospital. Thereafter I worked for a time in rural medicine in the Western Cape.

I am a family and people-orientated person. I enjoy my work as a doctor as well as social running, the outdoors and exploring our beautiful country with family and friends.

I hope the above introduction gives you an idea of who I am. In turn I look forward to, in time, getting to know you, the extended members of the MidAid family. I am always happy to be of assistance.

Wishing everyone a wonderful day further😊
Dr Emily Shires
