WHAT IS "HEARTBURN'?

GERD (Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease) happens when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus. While occasional reflux is common, frequent symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.

Common symptoms include:
• Burning chest pain (heartburn)
• Bloating or nausea
• Sour taste in the mouth
• Chronic cough
• Hoarseness or throat clearing
• Symptoms worse when lying down

What many people don’t realise:
Reflux isn’t always just about acid. It can be influenced by:
• Meal timing
• Portion sizes
• Stress
• Weight gain
• Certain medications
• Pregnancy
• Smoking

When should you see a doctor?
• If symptoms occur more than twice a week
• If over-the-counter medication isn’t helping
• If you have difficulty swallowing
• If there is unexplained weight loss or persistent vomiting

Treatment isn’t just about suppressing acid — it often includes lifestyle adjustments, identifying triggers, and sometimes short-term medication.

Persistent reflux can lead to complications, so it’s worth addressing early.

If you’re managing ongoing reflux symptoms, don’t ignore them — we can help you investigate and manage it properly.

If you’re taking medication for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid conditions, anxiety, or any long-term condition — a regular medical review is important.

Over time:
• Your body changes
• Your health goals change
• Some medications may need adjusting
• Side effects can creep in quietly

A yearly review helps make sure that:
✔️ Your medication is still the right choice
✔️ The dose is appropriate
✔️ Nothing important is being missed
✔️ We’re treating you, not just repeating prescriptions

Good medical care isn’t just about adding more medication — sometimes it’s about simplifying, adjusting, or reassessing.

Dr Christa and Dr Hanroëtte are available to help guide you through a thoughtful, personalised medication review.

If it’s been a while since your last review, it may be worth checking in!

🌿 Strong Bones for Life: Understanding Osteoporosis & Osteopenia
Your bones are living tissue — they rebuild constantly. But with age, hormones, and lifestyle factors, bone loss can start to outpace bone formation.

🔹 Osteopenia = early bone loss
🔹 Osteoporosis = fragile bones that break easily

Risk factors: menopause, family history, smoking, inactivity, low calcium/vitamin D, and long-term steroid use.

Support your bones:
✨ Eat calcium-rich foods (dairy, leafy greens, sardines)
☀️ Get daily vitamin D and some sunlight
🏋️‍♀️ Do weight-bearing and resistance exercises
🚭 Avoid smoking, limit alcohol
💪 Prevent falls with balance and strength training

Bone health is not just about avoiding fractures — it’s about supporting your body’s foundation for lifelong movement and vitality.

🩻 Ask your doctor about a bone density scan (DEXA) if you’re over 50 or have risk factors. Early prevention makes all the difference.
