Pharmacist are not general practitioners.
They don't typically diagnose and initiate treatments; what they do is verify the accuracy of the treatments prescribed against the diagnosis according to national treatment guidelines and authorize use.

Pharmacists are not nurses.
They don't typically administer treatments and physical care to patients; what they do is ensure correct actives at correct doses are issued at the appropriate intervals to the right patients according to therapeutic indications and medicine usage guidelines.

Pharmacists are not patients. They don't typically require pharmacotherapy interventions or counseling to avoid drug-drug, drug-disease, drug-food and drug-gene issues. They instead provide screenings, insight and consolidation on complex regimens where patients have multiple prescriptions and prescribers.

Pharmacists are pharmacists. They are the patient treatment bridge. Connecting and confirming medicine usage, regimens and management of therapeutic agents while eliminating risk. They ensure all medicine users utilize quality products (source, expiry etc), that are compatible (orally, renally & hepatically etc.), and optimised (adjusted for dynamics + kinetics in different health states or conditions) for their best possible health outcomes of safety and efficacy.

Pharmacists are so cool, they will do all that and still optimize for cost to improve patient affordability and adherence.

Dumisani and Ndumiso are both G1 hospital pharmacists fresh from registration. They both earn R45k. Dumisani wants to start a Master degree immediately after community service while Ndumiso wants to wait until he really has a pertinent topic and strategy.

3 years later, Dumisani has completed his Master in a random topic which has little impact and is still working in hospital pharmacy earning R50k. Ndumiso had some time to think and understand the sector, needs and he picks an emerging niche. He enrols for a master degree in pharmacogenomics which his hospital endorses and gains further sponsorship to start a program for their provincial patients.

Ndumiso completes his research and immediately gets a promotion a year later and now earns R75k as the PGx manager pharmacist for the hospital.

Sometimes a postgraduate degree can be more valuable if it's context and outlets are well calculated and determined. Take your time. Plan.

Avi shops at DisChem and purchases his medicines there. He heard of the new benefit rewards and is hyped up to save an extra R5 off his R100 medicine.
Avi stands in line for 45 minutes while waiting for his turn. He then gets a 5 minute wait time to pull up his medicine profile, process his repeat and issue the medicine.
Avi is not aware that he is due for annual screenings, and has been feeling a bit off but hasn't told anyone. He attempts to ask about stomach pain meds but the assistant sends him back to his doctor while rushing to call the next person in line.

What a missed opportunity at primary health level. Avi goes and buys a loose pack of grandpa with his R5 saved hoping it will help his stomach pain and discomfort.

What he got:
❌️50 minutes spent
✅️R5 saved
❌️no added recommendations
✅️R100 chronic meds

If Avi had gone to his local independent pharmacy:

Avi would have waited 8minutes to be assisted. Would have chatted a bit more extensively with the friendly pharmacist assistant who has more time to engage in Avi's life and health.

Avi would have been seen by the pharmacist as a referal from the assitant and even gotten some screenings done. Rx would have identified that Avi has a stomach ulcer based on his symptoms and medicine side effects; he should be avoiding all NSAIDs including Grandpa.

Avi would have received his R100 medicine without a 5% reward but the benefits would be the conversation leading to an important intervention, the stomach protecting drug, the educational insight on NSAIDS and a review appointment to see how he's doing in 7 days.

What he would've gotten:
✅️10 minutes spent
✅️R110 chronic meds
✅️(Free) screenings
✅️R50 stomach meds
✅️Pharmacist PIT & Recommendation
✅️7 day follow up appointment
✅️Continuation of care

ladies and gentlemen don't be like Avi.
Go to your local independent pharmacy and benefit from real personalised healthcare that makes more than a R15 difference in your longterm health. You're not just a number.

Karen and Katty start their own independent pharmacies in the capital city: Pretoria. Karen was an RP for a corporate for 5 years so she thinks she knows it all, doesnt need any outside help. Katty was a second pharmacist for 5 years and acknowledges her need for assistance. She joins ICPA and receives a whole lot of help.
A year later, Karen struggles with her compliance and ends up needing to get reinspected. She will have to pay for another inspection within 6months. Katty has ICPA compliance support and obtains Grade A. She will only need a reinvention in 3 years.

Katty also receives frequent training, attends roadshows and knows exactly how to structure her pjarmacy and clinic. She receives medical aid trainings and advice on services to maximize and how to claim.

3 years later, Karen is still struggling with her pharmacy while Katty has just opened her 3rd one!

Collaboration is essential for greater success. Partner with those who want to see you and the independent professionals win.

Yvette and Georgiana both make R50k net a month as responsible pharmacists in 2 neighbouring corporate pharmacies.

They both get into an altercation with their area manager Tony, who vows to fire them.
Tony, makes their daily work environment so miserable and it affects their mental health severely.

After 3 month of bullying, discrimination and intimidation, Yvette decides to resign because she knows she has a fully funded emergency fund of 10 months. She will be able to find another job within 6 - 8 months.

Unfortunately, Georgiana did not have an emergency fund as Yvette did. She has a savings accounts with about R60k in it. It will barely last her 2 months if she resigns. She fears the risk of being financially stranded.

Yvette comfortably walks away while Georgiana is stuck and has to endure the misery until she is sent to a mental facility and develops more related chronic illnesses.

Yvette's expenses:
Food - R5000
Rent/bond R10 000
Transport R 8000
Insurances R2000

Meaning every month she would need a minimum of R25k to survive.
From her R50k net, that means she was able to cut everything else out like black tax/ family, friends, leisure, travel, fun etc. and put away R20k monthly.
that means her total emergency fund needed was R250 000. It took her just over 1 year to be set.

Please calculate your monthly expenses and be sure to be like Yvette. Within 1 or 3 years of intense saving, you will have the cushion you need to start investing and taking more financial risks. Also this will give you courage to stand up to bullies and employers who think you are desperate.
