Be mindful when it comes to your words! Let’s focus on the postive!! 💡🤩

Why do we tend to find faults with patients rather than point out positives? 🤔
I once saw a consultant about hand pain, he arranged an x-ray and said my joints were ‘pristine’. Not ‘age related changes’, ‘ok’ or even ‘normal’ but PRISTINE! That word was so positive and reassuring it really stuck with me. It made me think too - why don’t we tend to point out positives to our patients?
We often hear, “my physio said I have terrible posture” or “I’ve been told I’m not moving properly”. Why don’t we hear, “my physio said I’m in great shape” or “I’ve been told my legs are really strong!”?
So I think it’s time we actively looked for positives in our assessments and told the patient about them! When we identify rehab targets like loss of strength, range or control they can become solutions:
Weak ➡️ some strength exercises will improve that
Stiff/ tight ➡️ that will feel better once we get it moving more
Poor balance/ unstable ➡️ you’ll feel more strong and stable with some balance work
What do you like to say to your patients? Let me know in the replies🗣️

There are lots of potential causes of anterior knee pain! The common ones you’ll encounter in clinic are included in this graphic but there are a couple of important points to add…
Pain location alone is not sufficient to reach a diagnosis. Symptoms can vary significantly in patients with the same injury or pathology.
Not every pain will fit a neat diagnostic box and some presentations may be a mix of more than one source of symptoms.
We can’t always blame ‘issues in the tissues’, pain is more complex than that. Whatever diagnosis you form never forget the person with the pain and be careful to explain it to them in a way that they can understand that reduces fear and helps them manage it successfully.
Please like and share this if you find it helpful and tag in a friend who might interested.
Lastly, I have a question for you… how would these differential diagnoses change your treatment of someone with knee pain? For example, would you manage Patellofemoral Pain the same way as Patellar Tendinopathy? Let me know in the comments 🗣️
