South Africa’s digital identity ecosystem is under threat.
A recent article by Gadget.co.za revealed a proposed increase in the Department of Home Affairs’ (DHA) ID verification fee—from 15 cents to R10 per lookup. This isn’t just a pricing issue; it poses a real risk to the security and accessibility of South Africa’s entire digital identity system.
At Ideco, we enable trusted identity verification through solutions like the Famoco FP200 mobile biometric device, running our eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) platform. This powerful tool allows banks, credit providers, and motor dealerships to:
• Capture fingerprints and facial biometrics.
• Verify identities in real-time against DHA records.
• Retrieve and confirm identity data to prevent fraud.
The system uses secure Wi-Fi or GSM connections with end-to-end encryption, ensuring compliance with F**A and POPIA while streamlining customer onboarding.
Our MD Marius Coetzee shares key insights on why maintaining affordable, reliable access to DHA verification is critical to South Africa’s security and digital progress.
