So traveling for the first time overseas from South Africa to Australia with my food allergy son was more scary before the actual travel, as I am a planner and wanted to give my son options.
Here are a few tips and tricks I did before and during our travels.
* make sure your emergency medicine is ready and up to date and keep with you on the plane. We took 2x epipens, allecet antihistamine syrup (less than 100mm).
* Get a letter from allergist to confirm allergies and requirements like emergency medicine ect.
* Call airline and check if they can cater for your needs. My son has egg and dairy allergy and I was able to arrange a vegan meal but he only had the fresh fruit in the meals as I did not want take a chance while we are on a 12hour flight.
* Take your own food (not liquid) and snacks. This really helped and just declare declare declare on the other end if you are not sure. We took a hamburger, biscuits, fruit, vegan protein bars, drywors, dried mango.
* Make sure the airline is aware of your allergy and seriousness of reaction.
The traveling ended up being quite easy as we were prepared and my son (7 year old) really was great in understanding what he can and can not have.
We were warned that the airline can not guarantee food is free from allergens and that is the main reason we did not rely on only their food.
Hope this can help you guys to travel safe.
