To all the parents out there:

You might be inclined to create a minute by minute schedule for your kids. You have high hopes of hours of learning, including online activities, science experiments, and book reports. You’ll limit technology until everything is done! But here’s the thing...

Our kids are just as scared as we are right now. Our kids not only can hear everything that is going on around them, but they feel our constant tension and anxiety. They have never experienced anything like this before. Although the idea of being off of school for 4 weeks sounds awesome, they are probably picturing a fun time like summer break, not the reality of being trapped at home and not seeing their friends.

Over the coming weeks, you will see an increase in behaviour issues with your kids. Whether it’s anxiety, or anger, or protest that they can’t do things normally - it will happen. You’ll see more meltdowns, tantrums, and oppositional behavior in the coming weeks. This is normal and expected under these circumstances.

What kids need right now is to feel comforted and loved. To feel like it’s all going to be ok. Play outside. Bake cookies and paint pictures. Play board games and watch movies. Do a science experiment together or find virtual field trips of the zoo. Start a book and read together as a family. Snuggle under warm blankets and do nothing.

Don't worry about them regressing in school. Every single kid is in this boat and they all will be ok. Don't pick fights with your kids because the don't want to do math. Don't scream at your kids for not following the schedule.

If I can leave you with one thing, it’s this: at the end of all of this, your kids’ mental health is all important. How they felt during this time will stay with them long after the memory of what they did during those 4 weeks is long gone. So keep that in mind, every single day. Praise your child, talk to them, study with them. By keep the brain ticking over, along with keeping them smiling and excited.

'Having a hoot' as we practice our pencil pressure using this helpful resource from 🦉✏️👌🏻
We also touched on some emotional intelligence as this kiddo had to tell me what each owl might be feeling 🙂😠😳 Love how a simple activity can serve many purposes 😁

Rocked the most unique socks I own in honour of today 😁 Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when there is an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. As chromosomes look like colourful pairs of socks when seen under a microscope, wearing mismatched socks reminds us to celebrate the things that make each of us unique🧦 (As today is also Human Rights Day here in SA, this also beautifully reminds me of our right to human dignity - the right of a person to be respected and valued for their own sake 💛)

I remember the first time I ever worked with a child with Down Syndrome. We were doing some pretend play in our session and every time I pretended to cry, this little girl immediately dropped all her toys and came running to give me the most massive hug!!

She dropped everything. To show love. To bring comfort. To be present. I realized that that little girl knew more about love and compassion than many of us as adults do. What a beautiful example 💛💙💛

Yess!! A child's character is so important 💚

May we encourage each child to grow in character as they embrace all of their unique gifts, talents and interests in each phase of their lives.

Yes, good grades and various achievements are great, but character is what they take with them far into adulthood.

So commend them for kindness, thoughtfulness, saying please and thank you, helping a friend, helping someone who isn't even a friend, for sharing, for effort put in (and not necessarily the result), for saying nice things, for forgiving quickly, for seeing the beauty in situations, for telling the truth even when it is difficult, for doing what they say they will do when they say they will do it, for persevering even when they want to give up, for caring when others get hurt, for taking an interest in people and for being a good sport regardless of whether they win or lose... These are the most significant achievements 💚
