Sir Nicholas Rose Optometrist story began in the 1970s with Nicholas's first practice opening in Killarney Mall in Johannesburg. The practice moved to Fourways Mall when the new Fourways Mall was built. Nicholas now practises from his home at The Rosefield Polo Club just 20 minutes down William Nicol in the direction of Steyn City. Here in the peaceful ambience of the countryside at Rosefield where horses happily graze, birds sing and the air is sweet are our new consultation rooms at home. No waiting, no shopping centre crowds, no pressure, just Nicholas and his wife Jeanne and daughter Monique to assist you with your optical needs. Still a lover of the latest technology, Sir Nicholas will introduce you to the latest in Optics. Antivirus lenses, blue control, specialised smart office lenses, scientifically designed Hi-contrast lenses for outside etc. The practice uses Zeiss lenses exclusively and always strives to give you that bit of extra which has always made us stand out.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic Retinopathy is a condition that is brought about by diabetes which then affects the eyes. This is when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina.

These blood vessels can swell and leak, or they can close, stopping blood from
passing through. Sometimes abnormal new blood vessels grow on the retina.

The early symptoms of diabetic retinopathy can include but are not limited to:
• floaters
• blurriness
• dark areas of vision and
• difficulty perceiving colours
• having vision that changes sometimes from blurry to clear
• seeing blank or dark areas in your field of vision
• having poor night vision

All of these changes can adversely affect your vision. Controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure can stop vision loss.

NuEyes smart glasses may let you see better whilst wearing them due to their advanced image processing algorithms.

Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical condition which may result in blurred or no vision in the centre of the visual field.
Early on there are often no symptoms. Over time, however, some people experience a gradual worsening of vision that may affect one or both eyes. While it does not result in complete blindness, loss of central vision can make it hard to recognise faces, drive, read, or perform other activities of daily life.
Because ordinary optical spectacles don't help, this has been the end of the road for most patients up till now. By using electronic computerised smart glasses called NuEyes, (NuEyes Smart Glasses South Africa) and by manipulating the parameters that govern vision, they allow many patients to see vastly better again and give them back some degree of normalcy after their vision loss.
Do you or someone you love have Macular degeneration?

NuEyes South Africa was born out of the exploration and investigation for a visual device that could potentially aid a low-vision patient after Sir Nicholas himself experienced visual problems caused by an unknown source.

For someone who had been a high definition vision optometrist for 40 years, it was a strange new world to venture into but an opportunity for Nicholas and Jeanne to set out to find a solution for him to be able to see again. After seeing (literally and figuratively) how well the NuEyes Pro electronic smart glasses worked for him, the process started of being able to be a distributor of NuEyes devices in South Africa.
As well as being able to possibly help other low-vision patients who had been told by ophthalmologists’ that there was nothing else that could be done for them. That is how the marriage of Sir Nicholas Rose Optometrist, NuEyes Smart Glasses South Africa and NuEyes USA came to be.

With the advent of NuEyes electronic smart glasses, patients with ocular pathology that might be legally blind with normal spectacles, are given a chance of seeing again.

They are essentially hands free wearable technology, with a camera and screens to manipulate images so that a patient is able to have improved vision.

The glasses use their built-in micro-computing power, together with their image processing algorithms to enhance vision.

Illumination, magnification, contrast, focus, exposure are all manipulated to enhance vision.

Conditions that can potentially be addressed:
• Macular Degeneration
• Diabetic Retinopathy
• Ocular Albinism
• Optic Atrophy
• Cone-Rod Dystrophy
• Forms of Glaucoma
• Stargardts Disease
• Optic Nerve Hypoplasia
• Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy
• Nystagmus
• Corneal Scarring
• Retinopathy of Prematurity
• Forms of Retinitis Pigmentosa
• And other such conditions

Zeiss BlueGuard lenses-

We increasingly live online working on digital screens throughout the day. But did you know that our digital lifestyle is also exposing us to potentially harmful blue light? Every digital screen, whether phone, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, TVs, even your indoor lights, emit blue light. As a result, more and more people experience digital eye strain, tired eyes or even headaches.

The BlueGuard lenses are designed to address digital eye strain and provide more visual comfort, even if you do not wear prescription eye glasses. BlueGuard lenses also block up to 40% of potentially harmful blue light while still letting beneficial light through. Plus they offer sunglass level UV protection directly in the clear lens material.

Furthermore Zeiss BlueGuard lenses help you look your best on screen and in person, because they create up to 50% less reflections compared to traditional blue light blocking AR coatings.

Sir Nicholas Rose has always believed that there is no substitute for the best and with this in mind, has always been a partner using Zeiss technology and lenses in his practice.

We are proud to present the launch of Zeiss's incredible new technology:

1) Zeiss DuraVision AntiVirus Platinum UV

The global pandemic has affected all of us in one way or another. The awareness of viruses has become inevitable. Zeiss, known for optical superiority and precision lenses designed to give clear, comfortable vision and correct refractive errors, has come up with a solution to address this growing concern.
Zeiss DuraVision AntiVirus Platinum UV is a premium anti-reflective coating (ARC) that kills up to 99.9% of any harmful bacteria or viruses that land on the lens, which helps to improve general spectacle lens hygiene.

2) Zeiss BlueGuard

Blue light has been proven to be of concern and harmful to the health of ones eyes and adding to eye fatigue.
The use of electronic devices whether in small or large format changes viewing habits. Zeiss BlueGuard, a new generation of blue light blocking lenses is introduced to the market addressing today’s technology and media use, in the context of the “new normal”. The properties are now incorporated into the lens material itself. As a result Zeiss BlueGuard lenses provide excellent lens clarity as well as blocking potentially harmful and irritating blue light which is known to be linked to digital eye strain.

3) UV Protection

Conventional clear spectacle lenses don’t block UV rays completely, as a result, UV radiation is transmitted through the lens and can harm your eyes and corresponding skin. While our clothes and sunscreen can protect our skin, the only way to shield our eyes from UV radiation is to wear lenses with UV protection. It is a common misconception that you have to wear sunglasses to have UV protection, that is no longer the case. All Zeiss prescription lenses now come with full UV protection in a white untinted lens.
