Wait... No Stable?
Surprising Twists in a Story We Thought We Knew

According to the Middle Eastern scholar Kenneth Bailey, the familiar tableau of a manger under a starry sky more likely took place in a typical village home. Animals were present at Jesus' birth because first-century peasant households often brought their sheep, goats, or oxen into the domestic space at night for warmth and safekeeping.

And the "inn" that famously turned Mary and Joseph away? The Greek katalyma probably meant "guest room," not a first-century Motel 6 with a rude night clerk.

These twists don't rewrite Christmas. But they do add texture, irony, and a greater appreciation for how everyday people were invited into a moment of cosmic significance.

If the nativity still has surprises to offer us, maybe our own stories do, too. They remind us that God shows up not just in serene, Instagram-worthy moments, but also in noisy households and crowded schedules. And maybe opportunities to encounter holiness are all around us when we embrace the simple, radical act of making room.
