Strapping or taping is commonly used by physiotherapists for -
* Relieving pain
*Improvement of joint mobility
* Prevention of injuries/reduced injury recurrance
*Correcting faulty biomechanics
*Reducing strain on injured or vulnerable tissues
Physio's use tape which is applied to the body in order to achieve these aims, depending on what we find to be the problem.
Together with other techniques, strapping is an effective tool in the physio's toolbox to achieve optimal pain relief and improve function.

Did you know.....all physiotherapists in South Africa are "first-line practioners". This means that anyone that needs physio treatment can walk into a practice and be treated. They do not require a referral from a medical practioner or specialist. Also, X-rays and special investigations are not always required to treat problems. This is because physio's use a number of physical tests and a comprehensive assessment to pin-point problems and intervene accordingly. Our patients can trust that we have extensive medical training to treat and correct problems as well as prevent future problems from occurring. so what are you waiting for, contact your physio today and start to feel better

TWO-THIRDS OF HERNIATED DISCS HEAL ON THEIR OWN! - RESULTS FROM A RECENT META-ANALYSIS

Too many people think that once you have a disc herniation (or disc bulge), that you’ve got it for life 😥

Well, a recent meta-analysis (Zhong et al., 2017) has shown that 2/3 of disc bulges spontaneously heal on their own! Many of them within a few months too. 😱

Conclusion from the paper: “Because the overall incidence of disc de-herniation is now 66.66% according to our results, conservative treatment may become the first choice of treatment for LDH.”

Even though discs sometimes herniate, this does NOT mean they 'slip'.

Jarod Hall has written a great blog on what actually does happen and how to deal with it.

As 2017 draws to a close, I also celebrate a year in private practice at Sandhika Sewraj physiotherapy. It has been a eventful year, not without it's challenges, but also full of rewards and new possibilities. I've met many new people (whom I've had the pleasure of treating) many of whom I now call friends. To all of the new patients who have walked through my door, I sincerely thank you for your support and hope that I played my part in the journey of your healing. I'm looking forward to a fruitful 2018, with new adventures and improvements.Wishing everyone the best over the festive period.

Hi everyone,I wanted to post some useful information on home based physiotherapy treatments.
Home based physio services is when you have a physiotherapist provide treatment in the comfort of your own home. There are many reasons people could prefer this kind of treatment, namely:

1. It is more convient than sitting in waiting rooms of physio practices.

2. The treatment and exercise programmes can be designed around what is available at home.

3. Some patients are not mobile and able to get to a practice for treatment e.g. elderly or disabled patients

4. People are generally more comfortable in their own homes and they get quality one-on-one time with the physio.

These are just some of the advantages of having a physio treat your condition at home.

Remember, physios are first-line practioners and you do not need a doctor's referral to see a physio.

My practice offers home visits at affordable rates for people in Chatsworth and surrounding areas. Please contact me if you or a family member require physio at home.

The sooner you receive professional and effective treatment, the quicker you will recover and get back to Life!

Physiotherapists work with people to help with a range of problems which affect movement using exercises (targeting affected muscles or muscle groups) , massage and a range of other techniques. We work with people who have physical problems caused by illness, injury, disability or ageing. We see Human movement as central to health and well-being and aim to maximise movement. We also promote good health and advise people in how to avoid injury.

I love my job and that I get to affect my patients' lives in a profound way (such as restoration of physical vitality). My greatest reward is seeing my patients well again:)

Good morning dear friends. Today, I'd like to highlight the difference between hospital based physiotherapy treatments vs. Out-patient treatment. Essentially, an out -patient treatment is when a client seeks physio at a private practice (generally not affiliated to a hospital and run by an independent owner). An in-patient treatment means that one is admitted into hospital and then receives physio (amongst other treatments) & needs a referral from an appropriate specialist. Most people will experience physiotherapy for the first time as an in-patient unless they have come to a private practice before hospitalization. There are many pros and cons to both types of treatments. The pros of hospital physio treatment is that :
1. You get to see the physio while simultaneously receiving other medical treatment you might need and don't need to make special arrangements.
2. The treatment is conveniently paid for from medical aids (sometimes it's slightly more difficult to obtain authorisation for out-patient treatment).
3. The physio and specialist have direct communication at hospital and can decide on clinical matters together (if required).

There are a lot of cons to hospital-based treatment which out weight the pros :
1. Physios often take on too many clients at hospital and give shorter, poorer quantity treatments due to time constraints.
2. Client's medical aids are billed at full cost despite these treatments being quicker and lacking in attention.
3. Some Medical specialists will refer to physios unnecessarily, overservicing clients and undermining the real role of physio.
4. There is lack of continuity as the client will only see a physio for their hospital stay and often cannot get to see them once they return home.
5. Some larger practices employ many different therapists and clients can be seen by different individuals during their treatment cycle. This contributes to poor relationship-building (many people desire to be see by one therapist only.)
5. Physio have to 'make-do' in-hospital without treatment beds, low plinths or special rehab equipment that a private practice setting will have. Again, leading to poorer-quality treatment.

In my opinion, having worked and gained experience at both settings, the benefits of out-patient treatment far outweighs in-patient treatment. Let me highlight a few :
1. The care and attention a client receives at a private practice contributes to better overall recovery and results. Sessions are at least 45 minutes long and on a one-to-one basis
2. Better quantity of care results in better adherence to exercise regimes and quicker healing.
3. Clients really receive value-for- money. You simply get what you pay for in terms of time and hands-on treatment. Out-patient treatment is NOT more expensive than hospital treatment.
4. Clients go on to establish a strong bond with a therapist (long term) and this contributes to better feelings of well-being.
5. Physios working in the community contribute to it's wellbeing, in terms of education and prevention of illnesses.
6. We are first-line practitioners and don't need a referral from a doctor for treatment.
7. At an out-patient practice, clients are not seen simultaneously and have undivided attention for a set amount of time. There is no overlapping or cutting short treatments for 'emergency' cases as can be the case in-hospital.
8. Private practice owners have a wealth of time and educational investments made to enhance quality of care and can control these factors independently.
There is no question that I would choose out-patient treatment for myself or my family.
