Domesticare

Domesticare OCSA (Pty) Ltd. is delighted to offer DomestiCare – affordable, private, day-to-day healthcare for South African domestic workers. From only R160 per month!

It is an occupational health solution offered through the private medical practitioners of the CareCross Health Group, the largest national network of GP’s, Radiologists and Pathologists who collectively embrace the concept of affordable healthcare. DomestiCare has been designed for domestic workers in South Africa to help keep employees (who were previously excluded from any form of private healthcare) healthy and productive at work. It is offered to all domestic workers employed in a role for a private household. DomestiCare means no more waiting all day in queues to try and see a doctor at a state facility. It means no more travelling, sometimes far from home or place of work early in the morning, to attempt to get to be seen by a doctor. Your domestic worker can make an appointment at a time that suits them and you and they will be seen by a private GP from the CareCross network. If they need acute medication e.g. medicine required to treat a short-term illness, then the required medicine will be prescribed. If the medicine is on the CareCross formulary then there will be nothing to pay. Radiology and pathology tests, if requested by the GP, are also covered – as well as some maternity and HIV benefits. With DomestiCare Plus there are the added benefits of dentistry and optometry, after the required waiting periods. DomestiCare aims to give you and your domestic worker peace-of-mind that their healthcare needs are being properly looked after. DomestiCare brings affordable quality healthcare to your domestic worker.

The snippets below have been sourced from Wikipedia's definition of a "maid". What do you think? Do you think much has changed since then?

A maid, or housemaid or maidservant, is a female person employed in domestic service. Although now usually found only in the most wealthy of households, in the Victorian era domestic service was the second largest category of employment in England and Wales, after agricultural work.

Once part of an elaborate hierarchy in great houses, today a single maid may be the only domestic worker that upper and even middle-income households can afford, as was historically the case for many households. In the contemporary Western world, comparatively few households can afford live-in domestic help, usually compromising on periodic cleaners. In less developed nations, very large differences in the income of urban and rural households and between different socio-economic classes, fewer educated women and limited opportunities for working women ensures a labour source for domestic work.

Legislation in many countries makes certain living conditions, working hours, or minimum wages a requirement of domestic service. Nonetheless, the work of a maid has always been hard, involving a full day, and extensive duties.

Kenetswe Leah Mareme of Greenside, Maubane, who works as a live-in domestic worker for the Plaatjies family in Valhalla, Pretoria, won prizes including 12 months DomestiCare Plus health cover from the CareCross Health Group, a one night stay for two at the Sheraton Hotel in pretoria, a five-day Domestic Services training course by Maid4U, and an energy efficient appliance courtesy of Operation Khanyisa.

The personal health of Ms. Mareme will be covered by the CareCross Health Group, which launched DomestiCare to enable employers to provide their staff with occupational and private primary healthcare including GP consulations, medicines, x-rays, blood tests for R170 a month.

For an additional R25a month, DomestiCare Plus covers basic dental and eye care.

"Domestic workers are the backbone of society with many employers relying on their support to operate their own busy lives. We are glad to support this great initiative and recognise the valuable contribution domestic workers make to our homes and to the South African economy," said Dr. Reinder Nauta, Managing Director of CareCross Health.

Domestic workers are often dependent on state clinics or the ad hoc goodwill of their employers for healthcare, but DomestiCare bridges the gap between private sector health providers and low-wage domestic workers.
