National Su***de Prevention Week 8 September 2019-14 September 2019
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) approximately 800 000 people die from committing su***de per year across the world. Therefore a person dies every 40 seconds.
Within South Africa more than 6000 su***des occur per year. In the year 2016 12.8 people per 100 000 committed su***de in South Africa alone.
What are the warning signs for su***de?
-Talking about su***de, death or dying.
-Talking about feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or even guilt.
-Isolating from friends and or family members.
-Giving away treasured possessions to other loved ones.
-Not having the desire to partake in favourite activities.
-Struggling to concentrate or think clearly.
-Feeling irritated, frustrated or in distress.
-Lacking a support network.

How can I help a loved one struggling with suicidal thoughts?
-Don’t act shocked, rather get involved and ask if you can phone someone to assist
-Try finding them help with a Professional
-Always be willing to listen to them.
-Be non-judgmental, they are trusting you with all their emotions.
-Don’t be sworn to secrecy rather seek help.
-If necessary get in touch with police.
-Always check in with your own emotions.
There are also a few preventative apps you could suggest to your loved one. Please note that apps can’t replace Professional help and support. If you are concerned that a loved one is in danger, reach out for professional help immediately and notify their next of kin.
1. MY3-Support Network – This app has helpful resources for more information on Su***de as well as a safety plan to keep yourself safe and a list of contacts you can call immediately when necessary.
2. Stay Alive- Has a great life box, where you can add pictures that reminds you of why you want to live. This app also has great exercises such as breathing exercises to help you relax.
3. Calm Harm- Has numerous activities to help you manage the urge of harming yourself. This app is also helpful in identifying your emotions leading up to suicidal thoughts.
