Grief is the natural reaction we have to loss, whether this is losing a loved one or even a job, you may be grieving about anything that you have lost.

When we are grieving we experience an emotional reaction to change.
This experience includes a range of emotions such as sadness, anger and even denial. You can also experience changes in your everyday behaviour.

Losing either a loved one, your job or your pet is one of the most difficult things you can go through in life. We don’t just get over a loss, you hear the favourite song you enjoyed with your loved one, you eat their favourite meal and you are back to feeling all the emotions with the same intensity as before. However these moments will come less frequently and they won’t last as long. Instead of crying the whole day you could just cry for an hour.

If you or a loved one is experiencing difficulty coping with the loss, I highly encourage you r your loved one to seek grief counselling.

The Ted talk video in this post discusses the fact that we don’t just get over grief but that we grow with it, we move forward with it and we can always take something positive with us that the individual or situation has left with us.

Self-Care, what is this?
Self – care is any activity we do intentionally in order to take care of our own mental, emotional and physical health.
A number of self-help books state that in order for us to have something to give to others we must first give to ourselves. Look at it as investing in yourself, there is only one of you and you are important!
Self- care also goes a long way in managing stress and living your absolute best life!
Self-care activities include the following, just to name a few;
• Regular Exercise
• 8-9 Hours of sleep a night
• Eating healthy
• Read an inspiring book
• Meditate
• Seeing a health practitioner when necessary
• Engage in a hobby
• Go for lunch with a close friend or love one.

The comic below of Bean is one of the greatest instruction manuals for better self-care and managing your emotions.

What is the Role of a Registered Counsellor:

A Registered Counsellor provides short-term counselling, working with an individual’s current difficulties.
As a Registered Counsellor you can work with both groups and individuals of all ages, to examine their thoughts, behaviours and emotions in order to increase one’s self-confidence and personal awareness. By doing this one can also decrease the need for long-term or more intensive counselling in the future.

A Registered Counsellor is also trained in community development, whereby the community can be assisted in various manners. For instance an individual who is unable to afford or access more expensive healthcare services.

The focus of a Registered Counsellor lies in empowering both the individual and the community as well as promoting healthcare and raising awareness as well as ways to improve prevention.

In order for one to become a Registered Counsellor you have to complete an accredited 4 year Bachelor of Psychology Degree (or an equivalent Psychology Honours), also complete 720 hours of practical work, thus an internship under the Supervision of a Psychologist.
Thereafter you are required to pass a board exam with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) with a minimum of 70% and then register with this board.
