Today, the CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, together with EXCO members met with the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation board members.

The meeting aimed to strengthen Public-Private Partnership relations through collaborative solutions to advance healthcare and palliative care. Under the theme “Food for All, Health for All,” the Dietitians at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital brought nutrition education to life through community and hospital-based activities.

At Lourdes Primary School, they taught Grade 7 learners about the importance of balanced diets, micronutrients, and reducing sugar intake. Through fun and engaging games like “Build a Healthy Plate” and “Food Swaps,” learners applied what they learned — and even won prizes!

The team also engaged teachers and principals to emphasize their role in creating healthier school environments and empowering them to promote nutrition awareness beyond the classroom.

Back at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, both patients and healthcare workers participated in interactive displays and educational sessions focused on healthy eating.

By reaching both schools and the hospital community, the team addressed nutrition at every level — from prevention in the community to support within healthcare — truly living up to the message “Food for All, Health for All.”

I Serve with a Smile | Walking in Their Shoes

Today, the CEO of Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, joined our teams in one of the wards - not from behind a desk, but right at the bedside, serving lunch to our patients.

It was an interesting and educational moment, a chance to reflect that to truly understand hospital operations, you have to get your hands dirty. To grasp the rhythm of patient care, you must walk in your employees’ shoes. And to understand patient satisfaction, you must experience what they experience - even eat what they eat.

This hands-on approach embodies our ethos of “I Serve with a Smile” serving with compassion, humility, and purpose. At Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, leadership means service, and service is at the heart of our excellence.
