Dr M Mathir

Dr M Mathir Your family's partner in physical and mental wellness, proudly serving Glenwood, Durban. I believe that a family practice should be a warm and inviting place.

A space where the warmth of myself, my staff, and the gorgeous surroundings offers mental and physical healing. Before our consultation, you can grab a cup of coffee and sit in the garden. Your teens can ask for the WIFI password and your kids can play with puzzles or blocks. We practice evidence-based medicine, but with an emphasis on patient autonomy. Together we discuss and plan your next steps, prioritizing your needs (and your budget) and explaining how prevention now will also pave the way for good health in the future.

I don't think I've shared this but I'm a big fan of cooking and hosting in my home 🩷 I also love experimenting with different spices and flavours to change things up with our ramadhaan savouries every year. I've decided to share a few of my own recipes- inspired by my years in the kitchen 😅

Recipe:
500g chicken
1 tsp ground garlic
1 tsp Sujees homemade green masala (optional)
1/2 tsp salt (the sauce and cheese add the rest but taste and add as needed)
2 tsp ina-paarmans garlic and herb spice
creamy jalapeño sauce (I use cape recipe) to taste
Handful of gouda or cheddar cheese when mixture is cool
Fill and freeze your springrolls

Can fry or brush with oil and air-fry.
Enjoy 🩷

The conversation around GLP-1 therapy is changing. 🔄
A year ago, the most common question I heard was "How do I start?" Today, as many GLP-1-users start to reach their goals, the focus has shifted to the most important phase: "How do I maintain this, and can I eventually come off?"

In my practice, we don't just view these medications as a "quick fix" for the scale. We see them as a tool to improve biology (like reducing visceral fat) or managing the metabolic shifts that happen during perimenopause. ⚖️

But what happens when you’ve reached your goal?

Maintenance should be a strategic transition. For many, weaning off is possible when we focus on:
• Metabolic Support: Protecting your basal metabolic rate. 📈
• Muscle Preservation: Keeping the "engine" running through resistance training. 💪
• Hormonal Balance: Addressing the unique shifts that GLP-1s helped stabilise.

The goal is to ensure that when the medication is reduced or stopped, your body’s internal signals are ready to take back the wheel. 🧠🩺

If you missed it, I recently shared two reels diving deeper into chronic use VS weaning off - be sure to check those out!

I’ve had a vision for this project for over a year, and it’s finally here. 🥹✨

When I started this journey, my goal was to provide more than just a prescription: I wanted to provide a roadmap. Today, I am so proud to introduce Navigating GLP-1s: A Patient Companion.

This isn't just a digital handbook; it is a structured education platform designed to stay with you. Hosted on Teachable, you can access the course from anywhere, at any time, via the app. It serves as a "pocket guide" that remains close and handy from your first day of purchase to long after you have completed the course.

Inside, we cover the essentials for long-term success:
• Biology of Appetite: Understanding how your body controls hunger.
• Side Effect Management: Practical tips for GI symptoms, muscle preservation, and hair health.
• Lifestyle Integration: Specific nutritional and exercise protocols tailored for GLP-1 therapy.
• The Future: A dedicated section on the factors influencing a successful weaning process.

This project is the culmination of my heart for patient education and the belief that when you understand your biology, you are empowered to manage your health with confidence. 🩺⚖️

Testosterone isn't just for men 🩺✨
Reproductive health is a reflection of the continuous relationship between your current hormonal status, your metabolic function, and your daily lifestyle habits.
When we look at female vitality, testosterone is a critical (yet often overlooked) piece of that puzzle.

It's essential for:
• Physical Energy: Moving past chronic fatigue.
• Mental Clarity: Resolving the "brain fog" that disrupts your day.
• Sexual Health: Supporting libido and tissue health.

Hormonal balance isn't a "moment in time" fix; it's about optimising the systems that govern how you feel every day.

Take Action: Book your assessment before the Valentine’s rush 💟

Between 8 AM lectures and the library grind, the PCOS fatigue or brain fog usually win. But we’re not doing that this year ✋

What’s in the tub:
• Academic Weapon #1: We’re leaning on Magnesium Bisglycinate (250mg) to actually get some restorative sleep so we don't look like a zombie in the front row.
• Academic Weapon #2: The B-Vitamin dream team (B1, B6, and B12) to kick the 'brain fog' to the curb and actually remember what the lecturer said ten minutes ago.
• The Secret Sauce: A perfect dose of Inositols (40:1) and Chromium to keep the blood sugar stable so we don't crash and burn midday.

Less 'Yho, I’m tired' and more 'I’ve got this.' 💅✨

New faces, same heart 🤍

I’ve always believed that the best medical care happens when expertise meets genuine empathy. That’s why I am so thrilled to officially introduce the two newest members of our medical family!

On the left, we have Dr. Pather - whom some of you may already be familiar with. For him, medicine wasn't just a career choice; it was a childhood calling. He brings a deep dedication to family medicine and medical weight loss, always ensuring his patients feel like the priority. 🤝

On the right is Dr. Theophilus. She is a fierce advocate for women’s health with a beautifully holistic approach. She doesn’t just look at symptoms; she works collaboratively with you to find balance in your hormones, lifestyle, and overall wellbeing through every stage of life. 🌸

Whether you’re starting a new health chapter or just need a supportive ear and a medical plan that fits your life, these two are ready to walk the path with you.

We are growing so we can serve you better, but our mission remains the same: a safe, non-judgmental space for every patient. ⚖️
