Attrition, grinding or bruxism, acid reflux, consumption of acidic foods and drinks and excessive brushing can wear away your enamel and dentine causing your teeth to chip and be extremely sensitive. Teeth become glass like and almost "see through". In some cases, the wear is so extreme, the patient has to lose the tooth/teeth because of nerve exposure. These are always extremely difficult cases to fix because the bite has already adjusted and even if the patient does composite veneers or crowns, they are likely to break it because of the close bite unless they go the extreme route of root canals and then crowns. Here is a case of the wear caused by years of grinding but we gave the patient back his smile using composite. Not everyone is a candidate but he was lucky.
