Safer Irrigation Starts with Better Technique

Hand-held irrigation is a valuable tool in — follow these simple rules to maintain safety, visibility, and control during procedures.

1. Hang the irrigation bag 80cm above the patient to avoid overpressure from gravity.

2. Flush the device upright to eliminate air bubbles before use.

3. Use only small volumes (1–2 ml) — the renal pelvis fills quickly.

4. Pause between pulses to allow pressures to return to baseline (~3 seconds).

When designing Peditrol, we focused on key physiological principles:

• The very low compliance of the human kidney
• Limited renal drainage—even when using a ureteric access sheath

Each Peditrol fluid delivery is limited to less than 3ml, well below total renal pelvis capacity. By providing intermittent irrigation rather than continuous forced flow, Peditrol allows more effective drainage between deliveries.

The result? Up to 50% less fluid usage compared to a saline pressure bag.

A large percentage of patients undergoing continuous bladder irrigation experience acute bladder distension.

Bladder distension is very painful for the patient and it can often reduce, or even arrest, irrigation with resultant intravesical clot formation.
