WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK- 1- 7 AUGUST

World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated each year between 1- 7 August.

This week aims to highlight the huge benefits breastfeeding provides for both babies and mothers.
The larger focus on health and welfare of mothers aims to address good nutrition , reducing poverty and improving food security.

The event is organised every year by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network that aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world.

It highlights the importance of supporting mothers to breastfeed for as long as they wish.
The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2022 is: 'Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support.'
There are many different demands on busy mothers and their willingness to continue breastfeeding needs to be supported by their partners and others in a work environment.

Exclusive breastfeeding is encouraged for the first 6 months and the World Health Organisation (WHO) encourages breastfeeding to continue for the first 2 years.

Benefits of breastfeeding
1. Breast milk provides abundant and easily absorbed nutrients, immune factors and live antibodies from mother to the baby.
2. Breastfeeding may reduce a baby’s risk for many illnesses and diseases, including:
• Middle ear infections
• Respiratory tract infections
• Gut infections
• Allergic diseases
• Diabetes
4. Breastfeeding promotes healthy weight gain and helps prevent childhood obesity.

5. For the mum, benefits include :
• Stimulates the uterus to contract and return to normal size.
• Less postpartum bleeding
• Fewer urinary tract infections
• Less chance of anemia
• Less risk of postpartum depression
• Promotes faster weight loss after birth
• Lower risk of breast and ovaria cancer

6. Breast milk is readily available, at the correct temperature- no need for warming or sterilising of bottles
7. It is therefore affordable, cutting down on costs of formula for many families

Happiest MOTHER’S DAY wishes to all the amazing, beautiful mums out there......you make each day as special and beautiful as you are....

May you understand and value this most precious gift you have been given... often missed or longed for by many

And those who share loving memories with a mum watching from heaven, may you always rise to live up to all the love she left behind

Mums come in different forms, biological or not..... extended family members, friends, neighbours, strangers..... all moulded by the same ingredients-
STRENGTH, CARE, EMPATHY, HARD WORK, DEDICATION, SACRIFICE, PATIENCE , AND always LOVE

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY 6 NOVEMBER

The Government of the Republic of South Africa declared the first Saturday of November as National Children’s Day. The aim is to highlight progress being made towards the realisation and promotion of rights of children in South Africa where all children are free from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

South Africa's national constitution has a section dealing directly with the rights of children. This is called section 28. It lays out basic rights that every child should be given from birth. These include a name and nationality, family or parental care (or alternative care if this is not possible) and basic nutrition, shelter, health and social services. It also states that children should be protected from maltreatment of any kind, as well as exploitative labour. National Children's Day acts as a reminder that all children are protected under the constitution.
