T.G. Govender & Son Funeral Directors

T.G. Govender & Son Funeral Directors T.G. Established in 1960 in Sparks Road, Overport, by T.G. As time went by, branches were opened in Merebank and Pietermaritzburg.

Govender & Son are third-generation funeral directors providing families with dignified and elegant ways to say goodbye to their loved ones that have passed. (Tommy) Govender with his son Lagoo, the family business was soon joined by Tommy’s youngest son, Abbey, who then opened a branch in Umhlatuzana Township. Abbey turned out to be quite a people's person and soon became recognised as the face of the business. He became respected in his area and the reputable business that he ran complemented that. Abbey further expanded his network by being active in social and sporting circles. Then the third generation stepped in and relaunched the business in 1994. Kumar Covenden, Abbey’s son, is driving the business these days accompanied by his triplets, Kian, Uvaan, and Leya, continuing the longevity of the family legacy with the fourth generation. The four generations have seen over 60 years in the business and T.G. Govender and Son is highly regarded in the undertaking circles. Under the leadership of the hard-working Kumar, who has been known to even get behind the wheel of the hearses sometimes, Tommy’s and Abbey's legacy is sure to live on.

Most people don’t realise how often funeral directors step forward when tragedy strikes. Throughout history — and right here in South Africa — they’ve quietly stood on the frontlines of compassion.

From the heartbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, to the 2021 unrest that shook our nation, and the devastating floods that claimed lives in Durban, funeral directors have been there. Whether assisting grieving families, supporting recovery efforts, or offering comfort when hope felt distant, they’ve continued to serve with dignity, empathy, and strength.

In every disaster, whether global or close to home, funeral directors remind us that even in our darkest hours, humanity still shows up — with heart, with care, and with light.
