Self-motivation can help you develop a drive and determination to complete various tasks and goals throughout the workday. If you display high levels of self-motivation within the workplace, it will become noticeable that you're achieving more goals and are working harder to succeed. Strong self-motivation at work helps increase your productivity and makes you feel proud of the goals you've accomplished.

Ultimately this can lead to promotions at work, strong and trusting relationships with team members and the opportunity to work on more projects you enjoy and are passionate about.

Empathy is the ability to consider and understand the perspective of someone else. When you exhibit empathy, you imagine what it would be like to experience their situation. This could include experiencing feelings you might have in another person's situation. For example, if your coworker recently experiences a loss, you may imagine what that would feel like and respond in a way that's sensitive to what they may be experiencing.

Empathy is more than a character trait, it's a teachable skill. While it's true that some people are naturally empathetic, it's also possible to become more empathetic through practice. Empathy relates closely to emotional intelligence. The more you understand another person's emotions, the better you can respond to them.

In an environment where people are able to share feedback and constructive criticism, everyone is a winner. Creating a transparent, collaborative atmosphere at work gives us all the opportunities to become better workers and people. With feedback and input from our peers and managers we are able to learn and expand our horizons while creating trusting relationships with others. Most importantly, an open environment like this allows us to be proactive and share our input without putting people's personal feelings in jeopardy.

The concept of job stress is often confused with challenge, but these concepts are not the same. Challenge energizes us psychologically and physically, and it motivates us to learn new skills and master our jobs. When a challenge is met, we feel relaxed and satisfied. Thus, challenge is an important ingredient for healthy and productive work. The importance of challenge in our work lives is probably what people are referring to when they say “a little bit of stress is good for you."

But for some people, the situation is different. The challenge has turned into job demands that cannot be met, relaxation has turned to exhaustion, and a sense of satisfaction has turned into feelings of stress. In short, the stage is set for illness, injury, and job failure.

If you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in place, see what resources they have but don’t just focus on employees – management needs training as well.

For example, are managers trained to recognize emotionally at-risk employees, are they able to diffuse conflict, are they able to create an environment that is supportive of all on their teams?

The Institute of Competency and Wellness has interactive workshops, educational trainings, and online courses available for managers and employees that can increase positive behavior change.

No matter how hard you try to avoid confrontation and conflict, you can’t still escape from it.

The problem with unresolved issues at work is that these can have a negative impact on everyone’s performance and subsequently, the business.

This is where employee wellness programs come in. To deal with the conflict at a wholistic level and create a positive working environment by providing employees with professional guidance and advice.

Some workplace conflict can be positive, such as a healthy amount of competition between team members to reach goals. But negative workplace conflict, like bullying or personality clashes, can harm individuals and undermine teamworking.

Workplace conflict can occur in many different ways. It can occur across a wide spectrum of behaviour, ranging from a personality clash to more serious types of unfair treatment – like bullying and harassment.

As a manager, you need to be at the forefront when workplace conflict occurs between team members. If you don’t tackle this workplace conflict head on at an early stage, it’s likely to escalate.

Having employee wellness programs in your business helps management find effective ways to resolve conflict, while helping employees cope with the effects conflict has on them.

Leaders today, more than ever before, have to win people’s cooperation. And there are two main ways of doing so: motivation and inspiration. Although the two words are often used interchangeably, they actually mean quite different things.

Motivation is about moving people to act in a way that achieves a specific and immediate goal. When you’re motivating people to do something they may not necessarily want to do, you have to offer them something they want in return.

When coaches give their teams a pep talk during halftime, they are using motivation. They want their players to charge back onto the field or the court with renewed energy and focus, even though they may be too tired or disheartened to try. Their reward? Victory.

Inspiration, on the other hand, involves changing the way people think and feel about themselves so that they want to take positive actions. It taps into people’s values and desires.

Commencement speakers, inspire their audiences. They talk about the challenges the graduates will face, either personally or collectively, and the possibilities of making a difference. Inspiration's message is, “You can become what you want to be.” No reward is promised, other than the reward that comes from within: the sense of personal satisfaction.

As a leader, having employee wellness programs in your business, helps you master the art of motivating and inspiring.
