Too many times I have heard the words:

🩺‘I am so ashamed about asking you about my weight’
🩺‘I don’t want people to know’
🩺‘Don’t you think people will think I’m taking a short cut?’
🩺‘I don’t believe in taking medication to treat my weight’
🩺’ I really didn’t know treating weight was a thing’
🩺’ I don’t want to go to my regular GP because they wouldn’t understand’

South Africa has some of the highest obesity rates in the world! 🌍

We all know someone that is fighting a silent battle or you yourself are in that battle. We need to support our friends & family, so educate yourself & let’s change our mindset towards this topic. 👆

Hi! A happy new year to all of my patients & followers!🎉

For those that are new to my page, I thought that I would re-introduce myself & give you a bit of insight to my private practice👋 So, in a nutshell:

I am Dr Marlé Le Roux, I am a General Practitioner with my practice based in Eversdal, Durbanville. I studied BSc Human Life Science at the University of Stellenbosch & followed it with my MBChB. 🎓

As a General Practitioner I have a special interest in Aesthetic Medicine that I incorporate into my Medical Practice but also practice Aesthetic Medicine at Terre Paisible Medical Spa in Franschhoek & Senses Clinic in Kleinmond. 🤎

My focus in my practice is always quality & holistic care. I see patients of all ages at my practice and some of the common conditions that I treat includes the metabolic syndrome, skin conditions, weight management & general infections. 🩺

I have a strong belief in having a patient understand that they play a crucial part in their own health & I do so by making sure my patient understands their diagnosis, their treatment & their medical outcomes. I also have a fantastic referral network in Durbanville & management plans often includes the input of other medical specialities as well. 🩹

My favourite movie since the age of 17 was Patch Adams & today this quote of him still stays with me & I truly base my work on this:

“You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you win, no matter what the outcome,”

Did you know that there is now also studies that shows Va**ng is associated with Chronic Lung Diseases & increases the risk of Heart Disease, specifically high Blood Pressure? 🚬

Let me tell you what I hear most commonly from my patients that smokes:

“My grandfather was a smoker for many years & he lived until he was 90 years old…”

And the conversation that usually follows is something like this:

…Wow, that’s amazing! BUT, did he struggle with his breathing? Did he use asthma pumps? Was he able to do physical activities? Did he require oxygen? How did his teeth look? How did his skin look? Was he on cholesterol tablets?…” and the answer usually isn’t good..

Yes, not every person that smokes develops Cancer but the risks of serious illnesses increases & most importantly your Quality of Life is affected. 😕

Did you know that certain screening tests are advised at certain ages? EVEN if you do not have any symptoms or signs.🩺

When I tell my patients this, it usually is new information for them!🧐

By doing screening tests for common cancers/diseases we can prevent & treat the early stages/advanced spread/complications.

These ages are guidelines & if you are worried about any symptom it is still advised to talk to your GP & see what tests are necessary, no matter what your age.🏥
