Did you know that egg retrieval is a quick, painless procedure (15–20 mins) — and you’re fast asleep the whole time? 😴 Here’s a peek at what happens while you nap:

🌬️ A light sedation helps you drift off — no pain, no awareness, just a peaceful snooze.
🥚 An ultrasound probe gives the doctor a clear view of your ovaries.
🧪A super thin needle collects the eggs — no cutting, no stitching, no damage.
🧬 Your eggs go straight to the embryologist, who begins caring for them immediately.
🥱You’ll feel a bit sleepy or crampy, but most donors say it feels like it was over in a blink.

Thinking about becoming an egg donor but unsure what to do about your contraceptive?

Here’s what you need to know:

💊 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐥 - Keep taking your pill as usual. If you’re chosen to donate, the clinic will let you know whether to continue or switch. 👉 Don’t stop unless the clinic advises you to.

🩺 𝐈𝐔𝐃 (𝐌𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐓) - No need to remove it! 👉 Keep it in place until the clinic gives you specific instructions.

💉 𝐈𝐧𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝐍𝐮𝐫-𝐈𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 & 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐨-𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚) - This depends on the clinic. Some are happy for you to stay on them, while others may ask for a short 1–3 month break after your injection has worn off. 👉 Stay on your injection unless told otherwise.

🩺 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭- Some clinics are okay with it, others might ask for removal and a short wait (up to 3 months) before donating. 👉 Keep it in until you get guidance from the clinic.

🩹 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 - You’re good to go! You can keep using it as normal. The clinic will let you know when to stop in preparation for your donation.

The most important thing: please stay on your current contraceptive until the clinic gives you clear instructions once you’re chosen to donate.

• You first need to be chosen by a recipient parent before you can donate. This can take weeks, months, or even a year ...
• You only receive payment after the egg retrieval process, not before.
• Payment is made directly by the fertility clinic.
• If you need financial assistance to get to your appointments, we will contribute towards your travel costs, so you’re not out of pocket.
• You can donate up to six times in total, or until six babies have been born from your donations - whichever comes first

Some cancer treatments, like chemotherapy or hormone therapy, may reduce or even stop egg production. For many young women, this adds another layer of heartbreak to an already overwhelming journey.

Nurture – South Africa’s most successful egg donation program is the creation of two fabulous South Africans who have experienced the heartbreak of infertility first hand – Melany as an egg donor, and Tertia as an infertility patient who went through 9 IVFs to achieve her dream. Assisted by a fabulous group of women, the gals at Nurture make a formidable team who combine the best of heart and soul to provide truly excellent service. In our 11 years of existence we have done over 2200 donor egg cycles.
