MEET Dr Nomonde Nolutshungu. A Medical Doctor trained at the WITS Medical School after qualifying with distinction in Social Work from Fort Hare. She has a good understanding of the socioeconomic determinants of health. For the past 30 years she has developed sharp clinical, management and global health skills and networks working at primary health care centers, small and large hospitals, large health departments and in the global health environment. She honed her Clinical and Medical skills working for Gauteng Provincial Health Department in the early late 1990's during the start of the HIV epidemic in South Africa.
The Dr designed and pioneered the Gauteng Provincial medical response for prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS including introduction of ART in the Province, this leading to her promotion to the National Health Department where she led the National AIDS programme from 2004-2007. She is well known and respected in the Health Sector for this role.
As Attache in Washington D.C., USA, where she was on tour of duty for 11 years, she represented the South African National Health Department in engagements with the government of the United States, its Health Agencies, large Philanthropies and industry in the US and at the United Nations.
Dr Nolutshungu has been Head of Department of the Department of Health in Gauteng Province in 2012 (on secondment) and in 2022-23 (as a full appointment) - this being the highest management and leadership level in the public provincial health system.
In April 2023, she went back to practice clinical medicine at the Tshwane Municipality as a primary health care doctor contracted by the National Department of Health. Patients and management at the Rooihuiskraal Clinic in Tshwane have high regards for her manner with patients and clinical expertise. Going into private general medical practice, she is excited for the opportunity to bring to bear all her clinical, management and leadership skills and experience towards a unique approach to healthcare and general practice management. Dr Nolutshungu's extensive clinical skills and experience give comparative advantage to benefit the patients she sees at her GP practice.
Dr Nolutshungu was born and bred from the Buffalo City Metro area, and she is looking forward to a mutually beneficial interaction with the EL community, medical fraternity, health service network, and health industry in the area and beyond.
