🌟 Your 5-Month-Old is Blossoming!

By five months, your baby is a little social butterfly—smiling, cooing, and even gurgling to get your attention. Every interaction, cuddle, and playful moment is shaping their brain, building social skills, and strengthening your bond. 💛

You’ll notice them reaching for toys just out of grasp, rolling back and forth, and even sitting up with gentle support. Their curiosity and determination are not just adorable—they’re important milestones in their growth and development.

Feeding, sleeping, and play are all part of this exciting journey. Whether it’s watching them study your every move during mealtime, discovering new textures, or giggling at silly faces, these small moments are laying the foundation for a healthy, happy, and confident little human.

Cherish the cuddles, the coos, and even the cranky moments—they’re all part of your baby’s unique personality unfolding.

In South Africa, newer vaccines protect children against Hib, pneumonia, hepatitis B, HPV, and rotavirus, helping our little ones grow up healthy and strong.

⚠️ The success of vaccines shouldn’t lead to complacency—continued immunisation is key to keeping preventable diseases at bay.

National Disability Rights Awareness Month in South Africa, culminating on 3 December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Disability can be physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, developmental, or a combination—and can be present from birth or occur during life.

This month reminds us to break down barriers, promote inclusivity, and take concrete action to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities. 💙

Together, we can build a more equitable and empowering society.

Early care makes all the difference. 💗

21/10/2025

🤰✨ Identifying and addressing health problems early is one of the many reasons antenatal care is so important — for both mom and baby.

💗 Regular check-ups help:

Monitor your health and your baby’s growth
Detect and address any possible health problems promptly
Provide guidance on nutrition, exercise & what to expect at each stage
Support you in creating a birth plan that suits your needs

👩‍⚕️ Antenatal visits also prepare expectant parents for birth and parenthood — giving you confidence every step of the way.

💙💛 National Down Syndrome Day is commemorated to raise awareness and share facts about the condition.

✨ What is Down syndrome?
It’s a chromosomal disorder caused by an extra number 21 chromosome (Trisomy 21), leading to delays in physical and intellectual development.

🔹 Facts about Down syndrome:

It affects 1 in 650 babies in developing countries, and 1 in 1 000 in developed countries.
80% of children with Down syndrome are born to mothers under 35.
It is not related to age, race, religion, or socio-economic background.
With proper medical care, individuals can live up to 50–55 years.
Children can attend normal schools and thrive with inclusive education.

💡 Down syndrome cannot be cured, but with love, care, and support, people with Down syndrome can live meaningful, fulfilling lives.

🎗️ Know the risk factors for breast cancer

Your risk of breast cancer may be higher if you:
🔹 Are over 50 (though younger women can also be affected)
🔹 Have a family history or inherited abnormal gene (BRCA1/BRCA2)
🔹 Have dense breast tissue
🔹 Have never given birth or had your first child after 30
🔹 Use oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy after menopause
🔹 Consume alcohol or live a sedentary lifestyle

⚠️ Warning signs to look out for:

Lumps in the breast or armpit
Skin or nipple changes (dimpling, discharge, retraction)
Unusual swelling or asymmetry between breasts

✅ Regular self-exams and mammograms from age 40 are key to early detection. Remember: most lumps are benign, but always get checked by a healthcare professional.

🍎🥦 What you eat matters for your breast health!

Research shows that certain foods may help lower your risk of breast cancer, while others may increase it.

✅ Foods to enjoy: leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, citrus fruits, berries, fatty fish, beans, fermented foods, whole grains, walnuts, herbs & spices.
❌ Foods to limit/avoid: alcohol, fast food, fried foods, processed meats, added sugar, refined carbs.

But remember — nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle. Regular screenings like mammograms and self-checks are essential for early detection. 💗

💡 Take charge of your health: eat smart, live well, and book your breast cancer screening today.
