Today is World Birth Defect Day, where we create awareness around birth defects.

Birth defects affect individuals, family, friends, and communities.

While “birth defect” is a medical term, it doesn’t mean that an individual is “defective.” Instead, it refers to health conditions that develop in a baby before birth that affects the structure or function of their body.

Though not all birth defects can be avoided, prenatal care and awareness of past or current conditions can help with prevention.

We are in the middle of Pregnancy Awareness Week.

Pregnancy Awareness Week is there to strengthen pregnancy education and to highlight important issues in pregnancy and to promote healthy pregnancies and safe motherhood.

Pregnant women should attend antenatal care as soon as they suspect they are pregnant and within their first trimester.

A few things highlighted in the post is:

* Signs and symptoms of pregnancy
- You might have only 1 or none of these symptoms, but if you suspect you are pregnant, go see your doctor

* How to date your pregnancy, or to know how far along you are
- It is important to know the gestation of your pregnancy, as this key in knowing what to expect in the development of your baby

* Minor complaints in pregnancy
- These are common complaints that does not require any medical treatment
