Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling due to a build-up of lymphatic fluid in the body. It occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged, blocked, or unable to drain fluid properly.
This swelling most commonly appears in the arms or legs, but it can also affect the face, neck, abdomen, breast, or ge***al area.
There are two main types:
• Primary lymphoedema – caused by conge***al abnormalities of the lymphatic system.
• Secondary lymphoedema – caused by damage to lymph nodes or vessels, often after cancer treatment, surgery, infection, trauma, or radiation therapy.
Stages of lymphoedema:
1️⃣ Stage 0 – Latent stage
No visible swelling yet, but the lymphatic system is already compromised.
2️⃣ Stage 1 – Early stage
Soft swelling that may reduce with elevation.
3️⃣ Stage 2 – Moderate stage
Persistent swelling, tissue begins to harden (fibrosis). Elevation no longer reduces swelling.
4️⃣ Stage 3 – Advanced stage
Significant swelling, skin thickening and changes may occur.
The good news: lymphoedema can be effectively managed when treated early by trained therapists.
Treatment may include:
✔️ Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
✔️ Compression therapy
✔️ Exercise and movement therapy
✔️ Skin care and infection prevention
✔️ Education and long-term management
Early treatment helps reduce swelling, prevent complications, and improve quality of life.
