South Africa is paving the way for a new kind of road β€” one built from recycled milk bottles. These plastic roads are created by blending shredded high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the same plastic used in milk containers, with asphalt. The result is a more durable, flexible surface that not only lasts longer than traditional asphalt but is also significantly more resistant to potholes and cracking.

The innovation tackles two major issues at once: plastic waste and deteriorating road quality. For every kilometer of plastic road laid, thousands of milk bottles are diverted from landfills or waterways. Instead of burning or burying waste, the country repurposes it into infrastructure β€” making roads that stand up better to heat, heavy loads, and changing weather conditions.

Unlike conventional roads, plastic-infused asphalt can handle expansion and contraction more efficiently. This means fewer repairs and a smoother ride for vehicles, which also helps reduce fuel consumption over time. Municipalities have noted not only performance benefits but also cost savings in long-term maintenance.

This project is part of a larger shift toward green infrastructure in South Africa. Local communities have also been involved in plastic collection, creating jobs and encouraging awareness around recycling. With a circular economy mindset, the roads become more than just a surface to drive on β€” they’re proof of how environmental responsibility and innovation can merge to improve daily life.

Recent serious assaults on security personnel highlight a basic truth: employers have a legal and moral duty to anticipate credible knife risks and equip their staff accordingly. In the UK, that duty rests on solid statutory and common-law foundations and translates into clear, practical requirement
