Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts that are supported by the right amount of muscle tension that works against gravity while we stand, sit or lie down. Normally, we do not have to consciously focus on staying upright or walking, our muscles that control it usually does that for us.
To have good posture (military position), places the least amount of strain on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement and weight-bearing activities.
Good posture:
• Helps us keep bones and joints in correct alignment so that our muscles are used correctly, which minimises the possibility of joint pain.
• Reduces the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, which minimises the likelihood of injury.
• Allows muscles to work more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy and, therefore, preventing muscle fatigue.
• Helps prevent muscle strain, overuse disorders, and even back and muscular pain.
To maintain proper posture, you need to have adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion in the spine and other body regions, as well as efficient postural muscles that are balanced on both sides of the spine.
Our everyday activities usually lead to our bodies taking huge blows as it is constantly being put under stress and we might not even be aware of it! From sitting hunched in front of the computer or over our phones to spending long periods of time on our feet, our muscles are overworked and fatigued. This leads to poor compensatory patterns so that we are more “comfortable”. It is so important to recognise that just because it’s comfortable, does not mean it’s right – and in the long run, it could be hurting you even more.
So if you’re dealing with pain – it could be due to a postural problem. Pay us a visit and let us help you so that you can live your best life .
