The Importance of Sleep

Introduction: Sleep, often overlooked, is a vital component of our overall health and well-being. It plays an essential role in physical health, mental health, quality of life, and safety.

Physical Health: During sleep, the body works to support healthy brain function and maintain physical health. It is involved in the healing and repair of the heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.

Mental Health: Sleep helps the brain prepare for the next day. It’s during sleep that we form or consolidate memories, and lack of sleep can result in trouble making decisions, solving problems, controlling emotions and behavior, and coping with change.

Quality of Life: A good night’s sleep helps improve learning and helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Studies also show that sleep deficiency alters activity in some parts of the brain that control emotions and behavior.

Safety: Sleep deficiency can cause microsleeps—brief moments of sleep that occur when you’re normally awake. You can’t control microsleeps, and you might not even know you’re having them. If you’re driving a car, for instance, this can be incredibly dangerous.

Conclusion: sleep is not a luxury but a necessity. It’s as important to our bodies as eating, drinking, and breathing and is vital for maintaining good health and well-being. As we continue to live in a society that operates around the clock, it’s essential to pay attention to our sleep patterns and ensure we’re getting enough quality sleep.

We all have fungus on us!

Fungus is naturally found on our skins , in the mouth , a**s, and Va**na

All women have fungus in their Va**nas
The Va**nal fungus does not give the woman problems because it is kept under control by Germs called Lactobacillus. Under certain conditions this balance is lost , the woman then starts to experience symptoms
Although one can get fungal infection through sexual contact, it is not regarded as a sexually transmitted infection because even babies and virgins or those not sexually active can get it
The conditions that promote growth of fungus in the va**na are:

1.Warm weather
2. Poor personal hygiene
3. Hormonal changes just before me**es
4.Pregnancy states(because of hormones
5.Diabetes poorly controlled
Low immunity
deliberating chronic diseases
Excessive and prolonged use of Antibiotics
Douching or use of herbs or other substances in the Va**na. This disturbs the normal Va**nal flora.

6. Va**nal thrush or candidiasis does not come from toilet pans as the fungus cannot fly from the toilet pan to the urethra ,unless deposited their by one's hands!

7.Suspect you have Va**nal thrush when you have itching , with milk like discharge, redness in va**na
8. Treatment is by use of local anti fungal creams , lotions, pessaries or antifungal tablets(not used in pregnancy)

On Public toilets, I think we have guided enough, we won't come back to it again! They have never been the source of your fungal infection, STI or UTI !

Abortion, contrary to what many thinks, just means loss of pregnancy from any cause, spontaneous or induced at 24 weeks(...

Abortion, contrary to what many thinks, just means loss of pregnancy from any cause, spontaneous or induced at 24 weeks( 20 weeks in the USA). When we mention abortion in our Patient files, many end up rioting thinking that we mean we did something wrong.

This is the reason some Patients use the word 'miscarriage 'as a substitute. The 1996 Abortion Act in South Africa allows abortion only in selected cases:

1. In cases where the life of the woman carrying the pregnancy can be endangered as she continues with the pregnancy. Cases like severe heart disease.

2. In cases of very serious social-economic circumstances that would endanger the life of the mother and child.

3. In cases of In**st, r**e, and defiling.

4 Severe deformities of the baby in utero, not consistent with life outside it.

What I have seen over time is that few girls or women can satisfy this criterion, so many opt for unsafe criminal abortions.

Methods range from inserting sticks into the cervix or drinking some herbal medications as well as overdosing themselves with conventional drugs like Panadol or Caffeoyl.

When I worked as a Junior doctor from 2005-2006, we used to clean girls with incomplete abortions daily, numbering more than 20! Many we admitted with complications. Some lost their wombs at a very young age.

Some we could not save from very serious complications like bleeding or widespread infections. So whatever our attitudes to abortion may be, girls will do anything to abort.
They will go for criminal abortions, regardless. Many end up dying. This is the reason perhaps that RSA after Mandela came to power introduced a walk-in, walk our abortion service, with...

Most African countries have similar laws as in Zambia, and they too face very high mortality rates related to unsafe criminal abortions. I can’t forget when in 2003 while working in Botswana, two young ladies, who attempted to abort criminally, died in my hands while resuscitating them.

One was a girl from the house next door to mine the other was a good family friend. They both had taken some strong herbs that knocked out their livers and kidneys. We could tell because they both presented with deep eye jaundice or yellowness.
And you may recall the other case of a botched criminal abortion, a 16 yr old girl who lost her womb and part of her intestines and carried a p**p bag on her tummy!

Many years have passed but I still remember their faces and names.
I have always said South Africa needs to review this 1 February 1997, Abortion Act, make it more liberal, to prevent high maternal mortality figures.

If only those medical Doctors who perform this tragic operation of abortion would be reminded before each abortion that the opportunity to perform this surgery is theirs only because their mother did not abort them.
Somebody tell them this...
