When I was growing up, I can remember having a close connection to nature and animals. I always seemed to know what animals wanted, what they were thinking and feeling. It was only many years later that I realized I was picking up information from them telepathically and empathically.

So it seemed only natural that the Universe decreed that my first Reiki client should be a dog. He was a cute Jack Russel terrier named Patchy, who was suffering from Lymphatic cancer. He was receiving chemotherapy and Reiki helped him to cope with it and remove the side effects of it.

In those days, it seemed there were no other/few Animal Reiki Practitioners, as soon many animal clients started arriving for regular sessions. Reiki helped them recover from a variety of health issues and even some with long standing chronic ailments.

These days I send Distant Reiki to animals all over the world. I also communicate with animals in my Animal Empath readings, which is particularly helpful if they have health or behavioural issues and communicate with animals in Spirit, in my Animal Crossing Over Readings.

Please DM me, if you wish to book a Distant Reiki session, an Animal Empath or a Crossing Over Reading with one of your fur-family.

All these animals and my own dogs and cats taught me so much about healing and telepathic communication. I felt I wanted to share this knowledge with other Animal Reiki Practitioners, so some years ago, I wrote an article "My Reiki Journey with Animals"
which is published in this book 'Reiki for Animals.'

In her book - ' Reiki - Hawayo Takata's Story', Helen J. Haberly tells us: "For forty-five years Hawayo Takata carried in her hands-literally-the energy of one of the world 's great healing arts which she called REIKI. She shared this knowledge with hundreds of students and treated thousands of sufferers during her long career as teacher and practitioner of Reiki Healing.
Her path and mine converged in the early fall of 1973 when she traveled from her island home in Hawaii to teach a class on another island this one off the North-west coast of the State of Washington. I was one of thirty students in that class, and when this small Oriental eoman stood before us and said firmly, "REIKI means Universal Life Force Energy and we are all composed of this energy. Everyone can use this energy for healing- and I can teach you how." I knew she had the answers for which I had been searching.

Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.
by Frans Stiene.

The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai is an association that reportedly started in 1922 and still exists today. However….

“Dento Reiki as it was practiced by members of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai before Usui sensei’s death drastically changed after his passing and even more after the end of World War II.” – Hiroshi Doi.

Hiroshi Doi, and also other members of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai to whom I have spoken since 2001, all have said the same thing: many things have changed in this association over the years. These days the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai focuses mainly on the hands on healing element; however, Mikao Usui also taught the way to satori, remembering our inner great bright light, that we are Reiki.

“So the old Gakkai members said that Usui Sensei taught the way to Satori very intensely to those who had achieved a certain level.” – Hiroshi Doi.

We can also see this concept of satori being pointed out by one of Mikao Usui’s students, Kaji Tomita, in 1933.

“Its essence is seeking the harmony of body and mind. When engaged in self-cultivation by doing seiza, forgetting the “self” is of utmost importance. When it comes to self-cultivation, one must discard all thoughts…” – Reiki and the Benevolent Art of Healing by Tomita Kaiji (Published in 1933)

We have to forget the “self” – satori.

“This is because the source of reiki, the agent of this therapy, must be sought in the proper heart and mind. The power to treat disease is thus a by product of becoming a better person. The healing of diseases with this therapy is secondary.” – Tomita Kaij, Reiki and the Benevolent Art of Healing.

As Mikao Usui did, Tomita Kaji states that the healing of diseases in this therapy is secondary, we must first work with the mind, forgetting the “self,” I, me mine.

“The mind should be healed first and the body second, so that one can tread the right path of humanity. When the mind is healthy and its path of oneness has been adjusted, then the body will regain its strength itself.” – Mikao Usui, in the booklet Shin-Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryoho Kokai Denju Setsumei.

Of course we can see the same pointed out by Mikao Usui. Thus if we only focus on the concept of hands on healing we only work with a very small element of Mikao Usui’s teachings.

“Empty your mind and become selfless.” – Reiki Ryoho no Shihori, a booklet handed out by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.

Of course we can still see traces of this forgetting the “self” within old booklets about the system of Reiki in Japan.

But there is more….

“One of my students is an Aikido master, and through his colleague, I got my hands on certain documents that used to belong to a person who had studied Reiki under Usui sensei… Dento Reiki [Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai] does not have Dai Ko Myo symbol. According to the record I got on my own; Usui Sensei called Shinpi-den student into his room one by one, saying, “You have been working on developing your pipe of Reiki since you had it opened until you learned Oku-den Koki. But that is not enough, as you were chosen to be a Shinpi-den practitioner. From now on you must devote yourself to give the Light to as many people as possible.” And he showed a piece of paper with three Kanji characters of Dai, Ko and Myo on it, which indicated the basic consciousness of Shinpi-den practitioner. Both Koyama sensei and other Shihans [of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai] told me they did not know the above. Because this information came from a person who provided me many important documents and information.” – Hirsohi Doi.

Within the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai they do not teach or show the dai komyo and yet there are students, like Hayashi and the person Hiroshi Doi is talking about, who were taught the dai komyo by Mikao Usui.

This of course makes perfect sense, as Mikao Usui was teaching his students according to their spiritual development.

“Usui Sensei had no standard curriculum, and the length of time of the training depended on the spiritual progress of each student. It is said that he gave one-on-one lectures mainly on the right mental attitude needed for spiritual advancement based on his own experience.” – Hiroshi Doi.

Plus, what was Mikao Usui teaching before 1922?

In an article written in 1928, Shou Matsui, a student of Chujiro Hayashi, who is talking about Churijo Hayashi and Mikao Usui in this article, says, “It has been more than a decade since Reiki Ryoho was founded.” This points out that Mikao Usui was already teaching in 1918, 4 years before the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai was formed. So it is highly possible that Mikao Usui was teaching the way to satori, spiritual practices other then hands on healing and the dai komyo before 1922. This of course also links in with what Mrs Takata rediscovered in Japan.

“When John studied with Takata, he made over 20 audio tapes of her lectures and classes. On one of the tapes she discusses travelling to Japan in order to teach her approach to Reiki. While there, she met some Japanese citizens who were actively practicing and preserving Reiki as they understood it in Japan. Takata regarded their approach as entirely valid, but inappropriate for the West. It was highly complex, required years of training and was closely intertwined with religious practices. She felt these factors would deter students in the West and hobble the spread of Reiki through the world at a time when, in her view, it was urgently needed.” – Hand to Hand by John Harvey Gray.

I do not believe that Mrs Takata is talking about practitioners from the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, who focus more on hands on healing. Maybe not at that time but definitely now, hands on healing is more their focus. So I think Mrs Takata was talking about students who Mikao Usui trained outside of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, maybe even before 1922. Why? Because the system of Reiki was highly complex, required years of training and was closely intertwined with religious practices. However, let me be clear: one way is not better than the other. But to really rediscover Mikao Usui’s teachings, we definitely have to go much deeper than just hands on healing on others. This is, of course, also pointed out within the Reiki precepts, the symbols and mantras, the reiju and the meditation practices.

Here is a quick example. The symbol/mantra hon sha ze sho nen translates to, my original nature is right mind. It doesn’t point to hands on healing but to a specific state of mind, the mind of satori, our original nature. Joshin kokyu ho translates as pure mind with each breath; again it doesn’t point to hands on healing but to the pure mind of satori. The Reiki precepts are a clear description of our pure mind, in this state of pure mind there is no anger and worry, just gratefulness and pure compassion, and that state of pure mind we have to remember dilligently during all we do today.

“This is because, while other forms of Reiki Ryoho consisted merely of hands-on healing, Usui Reiki Ryoho was never intended solely as a healing method.” – Hiroshi Doi.

Rather, as Hiroshi Doi suggests, Usui Reiki Ryoho was intended as a practice to help us remember our ure mind, find harmony between body and mind, and remember that there is no separation between our “self” and the universe. In this way, with the practices of Usui Reiki Ryoho, we can remember our true self. And it is from this remembering that true hands on healing takes place.

On this day in Reiki history✨
It is believed that on the 21st March 1922, after a 21-day meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama in Japan, Mikao Use experienced a profound spiritual awakening, the moment Reiki was born.

This powerful energy practice has since touched millions of lives around the world, offering healing, balance, and peace. 💫

Whether you practice Reiki or are simply curious, today is a beautiful reminder of the power of stillness, intention, and connection.

🌿 Take a moment today to breathe deeply, ground yourself, and reconnect with your inner energy.

The Inner Meaning of the Reiki Kanji
by Frans Stiene.

靈氣

On the surface we see two kanji meaning Reiki, which is often translated as spiritual energy.

Let’s first look at the surface meaning of each kanji:

Some translations of the word Rei: 霊

* Spirit

* Life

* Soul

* Inconceivable spiritual ability

* Bright

* Unpolluted

* Pure

* Divine

* Mysterious

* Spirit; the spiritual aspect of the human being

Some translations of the word Ki: 気

* Mind

* Spirit

* Breath

* Energy

* Air

* Invisible life-force

* Vital energy connected to the breath

* Steam

So when we look at these two together we can come up with many different translations. I personally like this one: inconceivable spiritual ability of the mind.

This inconceivable spiritual ability of the mind is also pointed out within the precepts, as the precepts are all about a state of mind.

Now let’s look at the inner meaning of the kanji of Reiki. Each kanji is made up of different elements.

靈 is made up out of

雨 and 口 and

巫雨 rain

口 mouth 巫 shaman

So the kanji of Rei 靈 tells us that a shaman is performing a ritual to let it rain, and this rain falls in three mouths. These three mouths stand for sanmitsu – the 3 mysteries of mind – body – energy/speech. But this rain is not the typical rain we would think of. This is the spiritual rain which always falls down; it is universal rain! Ask yourself how do you touch the universe? To touch the universe you do not have to do anything as we are so intertwined with it, it is touching us inside, outside and in between. Hence this means that it is always raining spiritual energy, which in turn means that there is no on and off for healing to take place.

However, we often carry the umbrella of fear, anger, worry, attachments, and all sorts of other emotions and conditions. Often we are so busy carrying this umbrella we do not realize that the potential for healing is always there. Thus the shaman/practitioner practices a ritual so that she/he can realize that it is always raining universal rain, and this rain nurtures the mind, body, energy of the shaman/practitioner. The ritual helps the shaman/practitioner to let go of the umbrella and step out into the light.

氣 is made up out of 气 and 米

气 steam or spirit 米 rice

So in the kanji of Ki 氣 we can see rice and steam. Rice is nutrition; it nourishes and nurtures us. One of my teachers once said that now it is white rice but in the past it was brown rice. What he means is that the past teachings were more nutritious, not diluted as many of them have become over time.

But we can also see steam. So now we have to ask ourselves: how do we get steam from rice? We have to cook the rice because raw rice is not so nutritious and of course it is difficult to digest. How do we cook it? We need to boil it so we need fire. Thus in a hidden inner way we can see also fire within the kanji of Ki. But where do we put the fire? Above the pot of rice or underneath it? Underneath right? Where is our own inner fire most of the time? It is in the top part of our body; check for yourself. What happens when you get angry or worried? Your face becomes red, because your fire is in the upper part of your body. Hence the kanji of Ki tells us to make sure we keep the fire in our hara, our centre, just below our navel. The more we stimulate the fire in our hara, the less angry and worried we will be. So in a way the kanji of Ki shows us the right method to embody the precepts and how not to get angry and worried.

This is one of the reasons we do the deep breathing meditation practices like joshin kokyu ho and chanting the mantras within the system of Reiki. What stimulates fire? Air. So the deep breathing stimulates our inner fire so that it can melt all our anger, fear and worry.

We are made up of about 60% water, but most of the time our water is so stuck, frozen with anger, worry and fear. The inner fire helps us to transform our frozen water into steam again so that it can flow more easily through our body.

This frozen water represents our traumas, thus to heal our traumas and to let go of them we need to go inward, in our body, as this is where the transformation takes place and where our traumas are stored. The steam becomes rain again and so the energy starts to flow more freely through our mind – body – energy.

But what does this process look like, rain, steam (mist), heat etc…? It is nature! Look around outside. In nature we see the rain fall down, the sun heats the earth, the mist rises and it becomes rain again. An up and down movement of natural elements and energy.

Our mind body energy is a microcosm within the macrocosm, we are the universe and the universe is us; we are nature.

This is why people like Mikao Usui went into the mountains to realise that they are nature and that this external natural process of rain, heat, steam is also an internal process. This internal process is a very important element within Mikao Usui’s system. In fact we can see this internal process of rain, heat, and mist pointed out in many ancient spiritual teachings, often called inner bliss, inner joy or blazing and dripping. A good teacher can guide you through this natural process inside your body mind energy through teaching you the right practice at the right time.

Here is another hidden inner meaning of the kanji of Reiki. When the rain falls it doesn’t judge, label, or distinguish, it is just falling, but the trees, shrubs, flowers take from it whatever they need. The mist and the sun (heat) do the same, they do not judge, label or distinguish. This is also why Mikao Usui used the kanji of Reiki to teach his students not to label, judge and distinguish when they meditate, perform a hands on healing on themselves or others, and perform a reiju/attunement/initiation.

But it is all good and well to intellectually know this; the next step is to actually create the right inner atmosphere to have a direct experience of the inner meaning of the kanji of Reiki. Through having this direct inner experience again and again we become a wonderful vehicle for these natural elements to manifest within us, which in turn creates the perfect setting for helping others.
