👁️ World Glaucoma Week | 8–14 March 👁️
This week we raise awareness about Glaucoma, a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Damage to this nerve can lead to permanent vision loss if it is not detected and treated early.
Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because many people do not notice symptoms until significant vision loss has already occurred. It is currently estimated that 78–80 million people worldwide are affected.
🔎 Who is at higher risk?
• Adults 60 years and older
• People with a family history of glaucoma
• Those with conditions such as Diabetes or Hypertension
• Individuals with raised intraocular pressure
• Long-term use of corticosteroid medication
🩺 Prevention and treatment
Although there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection and treatment can help slow the progression and protect the vision that remains. Treatments may include medication, eye drops to lower eye pressure, laser therapy, or minimally invasive surgery.
✔️ The best protection is regular comprehensive eye examinations, especially if you are at higher risk.
Early detection can save your sight.
👁️ Prevention is better than cure.
