International Women’s Day – 8 March

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience and brilliance of women everywhere.

As dietitians, we see firsthand how women often put everyone else first — families, careers, communities — while their own health comes last. This is your reminder that your nutrition matters too.

Women’s nutritional needs change through every life stage:
✨ Iron for energy
✨ Calcium & vitamin D for bone health
✨ Protein for strength and recovery
✨ Balanced meals for hormone support
✨ Nourishment for pregnancy, motherhood and beyond

Food is not just fuel — it is self-care, empowerment and long-term health.

Let’s continue to support, uplift and nourish the women in our communities. 💜

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. While nutrition and lifestyle cannot cure endometriosis, evidence shows they can play a supportive role in managing inflammation, pain, and overall wellbeing.

✨ Focus on:
• Anti-inflammatory foods (fatty fish, olive oil, colourful vegetables, berries)
• High-fibre foods to support oestrogen balance
• Omega-3 fats
• Regular gentle movement
• Quality sleep & stress management

⚠️ Consider limiting:
• Ultra-processed foods
• Excess caffeine and alcohol
• High intake of red and processed meats

Every woman’s experience is different. Tracking symptoms, working with your gynaecologist, and consulting a dietitian can help you find an approach that works for your body.

You are not “overreacting.” Your pain is real. Support is available. 💛

World Obesity Day – 4 March

Obesity is not a lack of willpower. It is a complex medical condition influenced by genetics, environment, lifestyle, mental health, and access to resources.

Today, we raise awareness — not judgement.
We promote health — not shame.
We support sustainable change — not quick fixes.

In South Africa, more and more individuals and families are affected by lifestyle-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The good news? Small, consistent changes can make a powerful difference.

As a registered dietitian, I am here to:
✔ Support you with practical, realistic nutrition guidance
✔ Help you build healthy habits that fit your lifestyle
✔ Focus on long-term health — not just the number on the scale

Your journey is valid. Your health matters. And you don’t have to do it alone.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so millions of people don’t know they have it. Many dentists check your blood pressure during a routine visit. It’s a simple step that can help protect your heart.

Talk to your health care team about your blood pressure, your oral health, and how they both can impact your overall health.

Proudly supported by Delta Dental Insurance Company.

Save the Dates – A Season of Connection Awaits!

Our much-anticipated events calendar is filled with opportunities to connect, celebrate, and create special memories together. We warmly invite all residents to make a note of these dates and join in the activities that make our community so vibrant.

Look forward to favourites like the energetic Groenkloof Dash Fun Run in March, the heartwarming International Pet Day in April, and our welcoming Groenkloof Clubs Open Day in May. Prioritise your wellbeing on Global Wellness Day in June, and honour the spirit of giving on Nelson Mandela Serve Day in July.

August brings a particularly exciting milestone as we celebrate Groenkloof’s 21st Birthday, followed by an inspiring Leadership Summit. In September, we cherish family connections on Grandparents Day and focus on important planning during Wills Week.

Raise a glass at October Fest, celebrate our remarkable residents at the 90+ Function, recognise those who care so selflessly on the International Day for Carers, and end the year beautifully with Carols by Candlelight in December.

Watch out for the printed calendars that will soon be on display throughout the estate. Be sure to mark your favourites — your participation is what brings our community to life!

Here’s to a year filled with meaningful moments, laughter, and togetherness.

🧠🥗 Mental health and nutrition are closely connected.

What we eat can influence brain function, mood regulation, and overall mental well-being. A balanced, nutrient-rich diet supports not only physical health but also emotional resilience and cognitive function.

Dietitians play a key role in providing evidence-based nutrition guidance to support holistic health, mind and body.

💚 Nourishing your plate is one way to support your mental well-being.

We look forward to helping you live your best life!

Antioxidants: Your body’s natural defense team!
Every day, our cells encounter oxidative stress, which is triggered by pollution, stress, and even the normal metabolic process. Antioxidants help neutralize these harmful free radicals, protecting your heart, brain, and skin from damage.

Sources: berries, citrus, spinach, nuts, dark chocolate, rooibos, green tea, and colorful veggies.
Benefits: support immune function, reduce inflammation, protect against chronic disease, and promote healthy aging.
