Level 2 EMMETT 4 Horses this past week in Pretoria with a great group of ladies from Southern Africa (Malawi, Gauteng, Western Cape & Free State).

Plenty of wow moments and very excited students as they were able to toggle in and brush up on their accuracy of finding and locating the points on the horses.

A great two days of learning and sharing💫 Looking forward to seeing the group at level 3 and what they have learned and discovered during their practice.

A big thank you yo .equine.centre for once again hosting us.

DID YOU KNOW? Here are three quick fun facts about equine nutritional requirements as they relate to forage.

1️⃣ Horses prefer to spend AT LEAST 60% of their time grazing.
- Limiting time grazing can lead to behavioral and digestive issues.
- Horses with not enough forage in their gut are predisposed to gastric ulcers.

2️⃣ FORAGE should be 60-100% of the total equine diet.
- Forage should be fed at a rate of 1.5-2% of a horse's body weight per day.

3️⃣ Forage must be no longer than a ¼ of an inch long by the time it is swallowed to maximize digestion.
- Functional teeth are required for proper mastication (chewing) of long stem forage.
- If a horse can't adequately chew, we need to support them in other ways so that they can properly digest forage and avoid choke.

If you have questions about feeding enough quality forage to your specific equine, contact your veterinarian.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

Did you know? We can not treat the foot as an isolated mechanical object

The hoof is not a detached unit at the end of the limb. It is part of a continuous biotensegrity system, where load, tension, posture, and neurology are distributed throughout the entire horse.

This relationship is bi-directional.

Changes in hoof balance alter how forces are resolved through the distal limb. That changes internal moments, tendon strain, joint loading, and proprioceptive input. Those changes do not stop at the fetlock or the knee. They propagate proximally through fascia, muscle tone, and postural organisation.

At the same time, posture, rider influence, training patterns, and environmental constraints alter how the horse organises itself under load. That altered organisation feeds back into the hoof, shaping growth, deformation, and long-term morphology.

This is why hoof balance cannot be understood purely as a foot problem, and posture cannot be understood purely as a body problem.

The hoof both expresses whole-body organisation and influences it.

When balance is mechanically efficient, the system distributes load with minimal internal strain. When balance deteriorates, the system compensates. And compensation is not neutral. It redistributes tension elsewhere, often invisibly, until something reaches its limit.

This is also why some horses “cope” for years before failing, and why correcting the hoof alone does not always resolve the problem if the postural drivers remain unchanged.

The goal is not to make the hoof look right in isolation.
The goal is to place the foot in a mechanical relationship that allows the entire horse to organise itself with less effort, less strain, and greater durability.

Hoof balance is not a static endpoint.
It is a participant in a living, adaptive system.

It has been a fantastic two days of EMMETT 4 Horses Level 1 in KZN🐴

Despite the extreme heat and humidity🥵 the group was enthusiastic and made the most of their learning experience.

The different shapes, sizes and colours of horses provided a good variety and great learning for the students.

By the end of day 2 the horses were all walking up to the students wanting to be worked on, making sure they weren’t missing out on the good feeling they experience during and after a release.

We covered neck, hamstrings, wither, shoulder and part of the back in level 1.

Level 2 KZN date is set for 16 & 17 April 2026💫🐴

Heidi Johnson

Born and raised in KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, I grew up loving animals and the outdoors and what nature had to offer us as humans. My late Grandmother was a Doctor of both Homeopathy and Osteopathy. I loved her passion for alternate medicines, as I grew older I too found I had a love for the alternate modalities and what they had to offer.

At home we live as much of a holistic life as possible in today's world and have always turned to the alternate modalities for help or direction with regards to our health.

I started off with Equine Body work in 2009, along side studying animal behavior. In 2017 I started my Kinesiology journey with Touch For Health and then continued on to study Neuro-training, Emotional Kinesiology and Equine Energy Medicine. I've used the BEMER blanket and TENs machine for the past 12 years and seen the amazing results in both humans and animals. I recently started working with Photonic Red-light therapy, to expand my "tools" and what I have to offer. In July 2019 I started studying the EMMETT technique and hope to add that to my modalities and offer it to clients. In 2020 I started my journey following in my late grandmothers footsteps studying Classical Homeopathy. I am a registered member of the International Institute of Complementary Therapies (IICT), the International Association of Specialised Kinesiologists (IASK), Association of Specialised Kinesiologists South Africa (ASKSA), the International Equine Body Worker Association (IEBWA) and a student member of the Society of Homeopaths.

I found owning and breeding our own horses on our farm in South Africa, I was exposed to many injuries and illness's in horses. Over the years we developed many of our own techniques and training methods and incorporated them with the many we had learnt from others. I treated our animals myself, unless it was a case that was beyond my capability.
