For 100 days SA has been living with the reality of coronavirus.

A study has found that the drug dexamethasone has promising results in treating COVID-19. The Department of Health has recommended that this drug be considered for use on patients on ventilators or oxygen supply.

There are currently 34407 active cases in the country.
The lockdown slowed the transmision of the virus and we were able to prepare and enhance our health system.

While activities open up, we can reduce the spread through our behaviour as individuals. We encourage everyone in our country to wear masks when they are in public. However, this is no substitute for washing your hands with soap or sanitiser and maintaining 1.5m distance from other people. Social distancing is still one of the most effective ways of reducing the spread of the virus.

We have increased screening throughout the country. Shortages of test kits have required us to be more targetted in our testing. We are working on multiple initiatives to improve our testing capacity. Including the ground-breaking Africa Medical Supplies Portal.

Cabinet is easing restrictions on more economic activities (See pdf attached for details). Announcements with more details will be made in due course.

It has been particularly important to open up personal care services because this industry predominantly employs women. The women of South Africa are facing another pandemic. Gender-based violence (GBV).

In the past few weeks no fewer than 21 women and children have been murdered. Their killers thought they could silence them but we will not forget them and we will speak for them.

We have a National Strategic Plan to guide our country's effort against gender-based violence. Over the last 18 months we have made progress broadening access to support for survivors. Legislative amendments around gender-based violence cases have been prepared and lawmakers are urged to process them without delay.

Success in our fight to end GBV will require the involvement and support of our entire society. Every single South African is called on to consider the consequences of their silence.

We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and thank the health care workers who looked after these patients.

_Due to differences in reporting methods, retrospective data consolidation, and reporting delays, the number of new cases may not always add up sequentially. We are constantly cleaning & deduplicating the data to ensure quality._
