What if our children aren’t being defiant… but human?

So often, we jump to correction before connection. But when we lead with curiosity—“I think you forgot”—we leave room for growth instead of shame.

Kids rise to the story we tell about them. When we believe in their goodness, they begin to believe it too. 💛

What a clever way to illustrate the importance of speech therapy "homework" 🌼🌼🌼🌸🌼

168 hours in a week…most kids spend an hour a week (sometimes less, sometimes more) with a speech therapist.

We’re not there the other 167 hours! ⏳

Someone’s gotta be trained in what we’re working on in speech therapy.

For some kids, having parents sit in the sessions works great.

For other families, they might sit out because it’s their preference or maybe their child focuses better without their caregivers present.

BUT - in all cases, whether a caregiver is sitting in the session or not, training and keeping families up to date with everything that’s happening in therapy is a critical step in making progress.

I’ve been coaching parents in therapy sessions for over 15 years, and have come up with a very effective framework for parent coaching. 💪🏻

Want to learn my parent coaching framework?

Join me for next week’s episode of our live show where I’ll be breaking it down!

Remember to allow enough time for play 🛝

🧩Often times children seem to find it hard to unwind and play after a busy day. It is a sad reality that children can 'unlearn' to play if the opportunities to do so are limited.

🔑 They key here is to allow for boredom to kick in.

⌛️ Make sure there is nothing to distract them (such as technology) and mindfully create free time.

If the toys in their rooms are of no interest - do not buy extra toys! Open up the front door - nature is the answer. Children will play with whatever they can find. A stick becomes a sword, a snake or a straight line to walk on. A few stones can build a fort, the outline of a house or can result in a treasure hunt.

Play is natural - just give them the opportunity.

A tribe isn’t just a group — it’s a movement.
When a tribe is formed, change becomes unstoppable… because it starts one person at a time.🫶

Spelling to Communicate (S2C) empowers nonspeakers to overcome communication barriers posed by traditional oral communication by pointing to letters on a board as an alternative means of communication. By teaching the motor skills necessary to point on a letterboard positioned in front of them, nonspeakers improve motor planning and control, enabling them to communicate their thoughts and ideas quickly and accurately.

As a proud S2C practitioner and Mom of a non-speaker I’m honored to be sharing the stage with changemakers from around the world, in partnership with I-ASC, Inner Voice, Autism Centre Heidelberg, the Sisu Hub, and Spell It Out. This summit is more than a conference; it’s a movement for communication, inclusion, and connection across Africa!

I hope to see you there, joining me in making Africa a more accessible place for all nonspeakers.
