HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALLERGIES AND A VIRAL COLD IN SPRING

You can tell the difference between a cold and a seasonal allergy by key symptoms and how regularly symptoms appear.

Colds are caused by your immune system's response when you catch a virus. Seasonal allergies are triggered by your immune system's response to allergens, such as pollen.

Some symptoms of colds and allergic reactions are the same, such as a runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing.

But there are differences.

For example, people with seasonal allergies almost never have a sore throat or a cough. Viral infections, on the other hand, often do cause this symptom. And people with seasonal allergies don't usually have a fever, but those with a cold often do. With a seasonal allergy, you may notice puffy eyelids and dark marks under your eyes.

Gastroenteritis, or inflammation of the stomach and intestine, is a very common reason for a consultation at this time of year, especially in families with children

The cause may be infectious (viral) or from food poisoning after eating poorly prepared food. Most of the time the cause is viral, however, in bacterial gastroenteritis, Campylobacter is the most common bacterial cause in our country. The bacteria are transmitted as a result of eating chicken, eggs or dairy produce, or, less frequently, it can be transmitted from person to person or in water.

DRY MOUTH
Dry mouth, also called xerostomia (zeer-o-STOE-me-uh), is when the salivary glands in the mouth don't make enough saliva to keep the mouth wet. Dry mouth often is due to aging, the side effects of certain medicines or radiation therapy for cancer. Less often, a condition directly affecting the salivary glands can cause dry mouth. You also may experience dry mouth temporarily if you are thirsty or feel anxious about something.

For some people, dry mouth is only annoying. For others, dry mouth can greatly affect general health and the health of teeth and gums. Also, it can affect how much people eat and how much they enjoy what they eat.

Treatment for dry mouth depends on the cause.

WHAT IS OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. People with obstructive sleep apnea repeatedly stop and start breathing while they sleep.

There are several types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the throat muscles relax and block the airway. This happens off and on many times during sleep. A sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.

Treatments for obstructive sleep apnea are available. One treatment is a device that uses positive pressure to keep the airway open during sleep. Another option is a mouthpiece to thrust the lower jaw forward during sleep. In some people, surgery might be an option too.

Overview
Measles, also called rubeola, was once a common childhood illness. It's caused by a virus that spreads easily through the air and settles on surfaces. A vaccine can prevent measles infection.

Most people recover from measles in about 10 days. It usually doesn't cause long-term medical issues. But measles can be serious and even deadly. This is especially true for children younger than age 5 and people with severely weakened immune systems.

Measles is treated by managing symptoms and preventing complications.

Get a measles vaccine when recommended to keep the virus from spreading. Because of vaccination, measles hasn't been common in the United States for more than two decades. Often, measles cases in the U.S. come from outside the country. Outbreaks are more common among people who are not vaccinated.

Diphtheria (dif-THEER-e-uh) is a serious bacterial infection that usually affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. Diphtheria is extremely rare in the United States and other developed countries thanks to widespread vaccination against the disease. However, many countries with limited health care or vaccination options still experience high rates of diphtheria.

Diphtheria can be treated with medications. But in advanced stages, diphtheria can damage the heart, kidneys and nervous system. Even with treatment, diphtheria can be deadly, especially in children.

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve. This damage can lead to vision loss or blindness. The optic nerve sends visual information from your eye to the brain and is vital for good vision. Damage to the optic nerve is often related to high pressure in the eye. But glaucoma can happen even with typical eye pressure.

Glaucoma can happen at any age but is more common in older adults. It is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60.

Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is in its later stages.

It's important to have regular eye exams that include measurements of your eye pressure. If glaucoma is found early, vision loss can be slowed or prevented. If you have glaucoma, you'll need treatment or monitoring for the rest of your life.

WHAT IS SCABIES?
Scabies is caused by the human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). The microscopic scabies mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it lives and lays its eggs. Scabies can spread quickly under crowded conditions where close body and skin contact is frequent.

The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash.

The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching, especially at night, and a pimple-like skin rash. Common areas on body where symptoms occur include:

-Between fingers,
-In the skin folds of the wrist, elbow, knee, or armpit, and
-On the waist, buttocks, and shoulder blades.
-You may see tiny burrows on the skin, caused by the female mite tunneling just beneath the surface of the skin.

Infants and very young children often experience a rash on the head, face, neck, palms, and soles of the feet.
