A hello and a check in from us ☺️

We are deep in a glorious newborn bubble and I am so very grateful for my own patients’ patience, their willingness to be referred and the rest of our team that makes this machine flow so effortlessly and with so much fun added as well- never thought I’d have work fomo but I do😅

I have two full days in December and if you want to be added to a cancellation list please get in touch. January bookings are also open.
We have exciting practice extension plans for 2026 which have finally been approved after four long years of applications (if you work for the municipality, sorry, but it has been a soulcrushingly slow process)🥴

The girls are working hard to invite a christmassy feel, please commend them on that 😄

Dr Marisna is hard at work and acing her sports medicine Masters and already has so much new knowledge and skills to help our patients. If this little one allows me some study time I finish my Dermatology diploma from the Royal college of physicians of Ireland, which can further aid our patients with skin concerns.

If there are any black friday specials on skin products, I will announce asap. Haven’t thought that far, but there will definitely be😅

Have a beautiful friday, and thank you for supporting our practice, which is so much more than just a workplace. 🌅

The 2025 Cochrane review on immediate and early skin-to-skin contact after birth highlights that further randomized controlled trials comparing skin-to-skin contact with ‘usual care’ are no longer ethical.

The findings show there is now enough evidence to make immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth the global standard of care, and as WHO already recommends skin-to-skin the standard of care, the authors argue that randomizing the separation of mother and newborn may no longer be justifiable.

✨ Protecting Your Newborn’s Skin Barrier = Preventing Eczema

Did you know that something as simple as applying a gentle moisturizer daily from birth could reduce your baby’s risk of eczema? 💧

Your newborn’s skin barrier is thin, fragile, and still developing. A compromised barrier lets irritants and allergens in — triggering inflammation and dryness that can lead to atopic dermatitis (eczema) later on.

💡 Early prevention tip:
From the first few days of life, apply a fragrance-free, ceramide-rich emollient (like petroleum jelly, cream, or ointment-based moisturizers) once or twice daily — especially after bathing.
A baby doesn’t need frequent bathing as they lose water through their skin rapidly. In fact, the vernix they are born with is a wonderful emollient for their skin so try to delay the first bath for a few days! If bathtime is a family activity, go ahead, but load the moisturiser afterwards!

🍼 Benefits:
• Strengthens the skin barrier
• Reduces water loss
• May prevent eczema in high-risk infants (those with a family history of allergies or eczema)
• Helps preserve the skin microbiome

⚠️ Avoid: fragranced lotions, alcohol-based wipes, or foaming cleansers in newborns.

Healthy skin = happy baby 🤍

Some of my favourite brands (not sponsored) is Lipikar and even to wash with a plain Aqueous cream, and moisturise with a ceramide containing cream or even Petroleum jelly is 👌🏽

Early morning sunshine to prevent jaundice🍊

(Yessss, isn’t he lovely🥹🤩)

But,

Did you know? Gentle morning sunlight is one of the simplest ways to help prevent jaundice in newborns! ☀️

👶 Why it works:
Newborn jaundice is caused by excess bilirubin in the blood. Sunlight helps break it down naturally, supporting your baby’s liver.

⏰ Tips for safe sun exposure:
• Aim for 5–10 minutes of indirect sunlight before 10 AM.
• Expose arms and legs while keeping your baby’s face protected.
• Never leave your baby unattended in direct sun — their skin is delicate, in fact mama, sit with them, it will do wonders for the mood, and how have we been spoiled with beautiful days!

As so many of our patients/followers have asked, this is indeed our latest long awaited practice baby who made his arrival 5 October. Mom and baby both doing excellent and soaking in every minute (also soaking in various bodily fluids but that is part of the deal and luckily transient😆

South African summer seems to finally lurk closer and while we recognise the dangers, it sure has its perks🤩

✨ Pregnancy isn’t just about a growing bump — it’s a full-body transformation. ✨

Every system in your body makes incredible adjustments to nurture and protect your baby. 💛

Here’s how:

❤️ Heart & Circulation → Your blood volume increases by nearly half! This boosts oxygen delivery to your baby, while your heart works harder (hello, faster pulse). Blood pressure often dips a little mid-pregnancy.

🌬️ Breathing → Your oxygen needs rise, your breathing rate may increase, and with your growing uterus lifting your diaphragm, you may feel short of breath.

💧 Kidneys & Bladder → Your kidneys filter more blood (GFR ↑ by ~50%) and the extra pressure means… more bathroom trips.

🔥 Digestion → Hormones slow down gut movement. Great for absorbing nutrients, not so great for heartburn, constipation, and nausea.

🦴 Bones & Joints → The hormone relaxin loosens ligaments to prepare for birth. This, plus posture changes, often brings backaches.

🌸 Skin & Hormones → From that “pregnancy glow” to pigmentation changes (linea nigra, melasma) and stretch marks, your skin tells its own story. Hormones also influence mood and energy.

🤍 Every change has a purpose: to create the safest possible environment for your little one to grow.

💬 Did you notice any of these changes in your pregnancy? Which surprised you the most?

A recent meta-analysis of nearly 50 studies, presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, found that gestational diabetes is linked to a higher risk of autism and ADHD in children. The study, which analyzed over nine million pregnancies, showed that children exposed to gestational diabetes in the womb had a 36% increased likelihood of ADHD and a 56% greater risk of autism spectrum disorder. They also had lower IQ scores, with a nearly four-point average decrease. The exact mechanisms are still being studied, but researchers suggest that factors like chronic inflammation and high insulin levels during pregnancy may disrupt the developing brain.
