Adventure, community, and a love for the outdoors all in one place. The 2025 Jimny Gathering brought over a thousand Suzuki Jimnys and countless adventurers together for an unforgettable weekend. For NSRI, it was the perfect opportunity to connect, share safety messages, and celebrate the spirit that drives us all.

Sport has a way of uniting people on fields, in stands, and across communities.
Through the “Change the Score” initiative, NSRI uses that same spirit to tackle drowning prevention head-on. Because when we bring energy, teamwork, and awareness together, we all win.

Celebrating Partnership and Impact

We’re proud to celebrate our partnership with The Bed Centre, which has generously donated R100,000 to the NSRI.

This incredible contribution helps us continue to save lives, change lives, and create futures — our purpose at the NSRI. It strengthens the work of our volunteers and staff who, together, drive our rescue operations, education programmes, and drowning prevention initiatives across South Africa.

Partnerships like this remind us that lasting impact is created through shared values and collaboration.

Thank you, The Bed Centre, for standing with us in building a water-safe nation.

A powerful moment captured by Nic Mayger of the Hout Bay rescue boat Nadine Gordimer gliding past Slangkop Lighthouse during crew training. Even on practice days, every NSRI volunteer gives their all, preparing for the call that could save a life. Courage, teamwork, and precision.

On Saturday, Station 17 hosted an endurance training session with crew from NSRI .

Starting at 03:30, our team spent 10 hours testing their skills to the limit in challenging conditions. Training sessions like this are vital, as we never know when we’ll need to respond. Whether the call comes at 01:00 or during Christmas dinner, we’re ready.

This wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated crew members, and just as importantly, our sincere thanks go to our donors, whose support helps cover the costs of training and operations.

The crew’s performance was exceptional — completing 115 rounds of CPR on a moving vessel in rough seas, conducting crew transfers, and handling every challenge, not just in calm conditions but in the early hours of the morning amid heavy swells.

Well done to everyone involved, and thank you to the Kleinmond crew for joining us.

This past Friday, Station 17 Hermanus, Station 16 Strandfontein, Station 31 Witsand, and Station 49 Mdumbi joined Station 42 Kleinmond for an intensive surf training session.

It was a valuable opportunity for our Class 4 training coxswains, and we’re deeply grateful to the VSC for making it possible.

With so many assets and stations involved, coordinating this training was no small feat but the teamwork and dedication shone through.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible, and to our donors whose support ensures we can continue vital training like this.

Recently, Station 17 ran a Maritime Emergency Care training session covering practical skills like stabilising mechanical injuries, controlling bleeding, and immobilisation.

We split the crew into teams and gave them a common goal, which helped build a command structure similar to what we’d use on an actual operation — and added a bit of friendly competition.

In the end, Charlie Team came out on top with their excellent ex*****on of the skills, but it’s been awesome to see both our crew and the training crew grow and improve with every session.

Thank you Station 42 for coming out! It was an incredibly productive session!

Meet and greet the lifesaving heroes

Hermanus NSRI Station 17’s open day gave the public a close-up of their vital rescue operations and advanced vessels.

From icy water rescues to educating thousands on water safety, their all-volunteer team works tirelessly to protect our coastline.

Remember: respect rip currents — they’re the ‘drowning machines’ even strong swimmers can’t fight.
